NEW YORK (AP) --

Billy Crystal has agreed to star in a new television series in which he's paired with Josh Gad in a story about two comics in a generational clash.

The series is called "The Comedians." It's set to air on the FX network next year.

FX said Wednesday it has ordered 13 episodes.

"The Comedians" is based on a format popular in Sweden and will look at a late-night television show on which egos and generations collide. The pilot episode was directed by Larry Charles, who worked on "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Crystal has been well known for movie roles, a "Saturday Night Live" stint and repeated turns as Academy Awards host. But his last role in a regular TV series was on the 1970s ABC sitcom "Soap."

VATICAN CITY (AP) --

Actor Russell Crowe and the makers of the big-budget film "Noah" attended Pope Francis' general audience Wednesday but didn't get what they most wanted: a papal meeting and photo-op.

Crowe had lobbied hard for a papal thumbs up for his film and the ensuing publicity a Francis blessing would bring. The film has been banned in much of the Muslim world because of its depiction of the prophet, while U.S. conservatives have complained it took liberties with the Biblical account of the flood.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the request from Noah's producers for a private audience was immediately turned down.

In an email Wednesday to The Associated Press, Lombardi said there was similarly no scheduled "meet and greet" after Wednesday's general audience, when VIPs can often get a quick word with the pope.

"They could have been at the audience like anyone else," Lombardi More

Research firm eMarketer says it expects worldwide spending on mobile advertising to reach $31.5 billion this year, a 75 percent increase from 2013.

By the end of this year, eMarketer says mobile will account for nearly a quarter of total digital ad spending.

Mobile ad spending has been growing fast, mainly due to ad revenue growth at Facebook Inc. and Google Inc.

In 2013, mobile ad spending more than doubled, to nearly $18 billion from $8.8 billion in 2012. Facebook and Google together saw an increase of $6.9 billion in mobile ad revenue.

EMarketer expects Facebook's share of the mobile ad market to grow to 21.7 percent this year from 17.5 percent in 2013, taking a bite out of Google's share, though Google remains No. 1.

LOS ANGELES (AP) --

The new "Star Wars" has an official timeline and one confirmed returning character: robot R2-D2.

Director J.J. Abrams will begin shooting in May on "Star Wars: Episode VII," which is set three decades after 1983's "Return of the Jedi," Disney CEO Bob Iger said Tuesday.

Speaking at the company's annual shareholder's meeting in Portland, Ore., Iger said the movie would feature "some very familiar faces along with a trio of new, young leads." Abrams has a penchant for secrecy, and Iger said R2-D2 was the only "official cast member" he would announce.

"Episode VII" is set for release in December 2015.

Iger also said Pixar plans a third "Cars" movie and a sequel to 2004's "The Incredibles."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

Yahoo is getting another lift from its stake China's Alibaba Group, a thriving Internet company that has helped mask Yahoo's own financial funk.

Investors latched on to Yahoo Monday in anticipation of a huge windfall from Alibaba's initial public offering of stock later this year. Alibaba triggered the latest wave of excitement about its forthcoming IPO with a Sunday announcement of its intention to list its stock on a U.S. exchange instead of in Hong Kong. The precise timing of the IPO is still unclear, although the documents for the filing are expected to be filed within the next six months.

Alibaba's IPO is anticipated to produce Yahoo's second multibillion dollar windfall in two years. The money could be used to pay stockholders a one-time dividend, buy back more stock or finance an acquisition of another Internet service that could help Yahoo bring in more revenue after years of contraction.
