Barry Jenkins won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay on the strength of Moonlight (A24), a film he also directed, while Eric Heisserer took the Adapted Screenplay honor for Arrival (Paramount Pictures) based on Ted Chiang’s story titled “Story of Your Life.”
On the TV front, FX Networks scored impressively as The Americans won the WGA Award for Drama Series while Atlanta garnered Guild honors in both the Comedy Series and New Series categories, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story topped the Adapted Long Form category. Donald Glover, Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, Stefani Robinson and Paul Simms were the writers on Atlanta. The writing ensemble on The Americans consisted of Peter Ackerman, Tanya Barfield, Joshua Brand, Joel Fields, Stephen Schiff, Joe Weisberg and Tracey Scott Wilson. Writers for The People v. O.J. Simpson were Scott Alexander, Joe Robert Cole, D.V. DeVicentis, Maya Forbes, Larry Karaszewski and Wally Wolodarsky (based on the book "The Run of His Life" by Jeffrey Toobin).
The winners of the 2017 Writers Guild Awards for outstanding achievement in writing for film, television, new media, videogames, news, radio, promotional, and graphic animation categories were announced on Sunday evening (2/19) at concurrent ceremonies at the Edison Ballroom in New York City and The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
