Leading production and post production house Optimus today announced that “Typing” – a short film written by Ron Falzone, directed by Jack C. Newell and edited by Optimus Senior Assistant Editor Jill DiBiase – was selected to be screened at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. The film, set in 1939, features two burned-out screenwriters who must write a movie for MGM’s blandest leading man with three requirements: sex, adventure and a dog. Their frustration is amplified by the typing next door. Unconsciously, the two pick up the rhythm of the typing and find their story beginning to take shape. “Typing,” which features former SNL regular Tim Kazurinsky and Steppenwolf ensemble member Francis Guinan, will screen at the Short Film Corner, at the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase.
“Jack and I have worked together in the past, and when he presented the opportunity to cut “Typing,” which was shot on 35mm, I knew I wanted to be involved,” said DiBiase. “We really focused on timing throughout the film. It’s a very dialogue-heavy piece of work, so we needed to keep the audience interested and involved. For example, when one of the characters tells a joke, we had to determine if we wanted to hear him finish the joke or see the other character’s reaction. The actors were hilarious and so fun to watch, making it such a great experience to cut. I am over the moon about the film being selected to screen at Cannes.”
DiBiase brought in additional Optimus team members Marina Bacci (audio engineer), Joel Signer (colorist) and Ed Nichols (online editor) to work on “Typing.” The team collaborated with Newell on the film, which also was screened at the Chicago International Film Festival in October 2010.
