Leaders in Sonic Branding Score Strong Theme for Live Hour-Long Program of Top Stories
A new addition to the CNN nightly lineup, “CNN Tonight,” has launched with a complete music package from Stephen Arnold Music. The Leaders in Sonic Branding provided a strong, contemporary package for the program, which airs weeknights on CNN.
“CNN Tonight” features a live hour of the day’s biggest stories, with rotating hosts anchoring the program. Stephen Arnold Music created a collection of energetic, modern music themes all built around a memorable six-note melody, which sonically brands the show open, teases, bumpers, promos, and other in-show elements.
A bold mix of guitar, strings, piano, bass and drums, the “CNN Tonight” themes underscore the importance of the program’s place in the channel’s lineup. “There’s a large audience watching live news programming at night – this is prime viewing time for any network,” says Chad Cook, VP/Creative Director of Stephen Arnold Music. “The theme for this show had to be catchy, strong, and compelling, and at the same time, maintain a journalistic sensibility and integrity.
“For ‘CNN Tonight’,” Cook continues, “we produced a music package that really sticks in your head, and makes an ongoing connection between the show’s brand and its viewers.”
The CNN prime time lineup also includes “Erin Burnett Outfront” (airing at 7 PM EST), an hour-long news program which has been running on CNN since 2011 and also features a custom music theme and package from Stephen Arnold Music. In addition, Stephen Arnold Music has created custom packages for various programming on HLN, CNN, and CNN International.

Sonic Branding For Social Media: Engage, Align, Connect

Yet, while they know that social platforms are critical to boosting sales and attracting new customers, many neglect one of the most effective tools for connecting with consumers: sonic branding. Marketers often associate sonic branding with catchy mnemonics used by big brands like McDonald’s, Netflix and Intel in their advertising. But that is a very limited view of what sonic branding is and what it can do. Sonic branding is a way to build awareness and stimulate engagement across all touch points, from advertising to broadcast digital, in-person and social. So, it’s surprising that sonic branding is often an afterthought in marketing plans. That is especially true in social media marketing. Faced with tight deadlines and strained budgets, creative teams are often tempted to select music for their content simply because it “fits.” Unfortunately, that may result in content that is in tune with what’s trending but is out of tune with brand identity. Effective sonic branding, by contrast, requires thoughtful strategic planning,... Read More
