NY-based Sonic Union assistant mixer Brian Goodheart tugs the heartstrings of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in this 9:30 PSA, “<a href="http://www.civilwar.org/video/our-gettysburg-legacy.html.>Legacy,” for No Casino Gettysburg, PA. The PSA features interviews with actors Matthew Broderick, Sam Waterston, Stephen Lang, Medal of Honor recipient Paul W. Bucha, filmmaker Ken Burns, author David McCullough and President Eisenhower’s granddaughter Susan Eisenhower, and was used as a testimonial presentation on August 31, 2010 at hearings to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. “<a href="http://www.civilwar.org/video/our-gettysburg-legacy.html.>Legacy” and its backers argue against the development of a casino just a half-mile away from the historic battlefield of Gettysburg. All of the professionals who worked on the project, from assistant to celebrity, donated their time and talents to get the word out for this movement.
Ian Marks, editor at New York-based Crew Cuts brought Sonic Union into the pro-bono project. “I was already a history buff, but when Director/Producer Jeff Griffith said that Ken Burns, David McCullough and Sam Waterston were involved, I knew right away I wanted to work on this project,” says Marks. “The ‘<a href="http://www.civilwar.org/video/our-gettysburg-legacy.html.>Legacy‘ PSA puts out an important message that both myself and Crew Cuts are thrilled to be a part of,” the editor notes. Sonic Union was eager to become involved in this project and Lead Assistant Mixer and fellow closet historian Brian Goodheart dedicated his time to mix the project. Sonic Union Managing Partner Adam Barone was happy to be involved and notes, “We are always looking for ways to help our clients who consistently bring us work and it was even more beneficial that this work also supported a greater national cause.” Goodheart was not only eager to help a client and the cause, but also to get the experience of working with exceptional voice-over talent and the compositions of highly esteemed film composer John Williams.
“<a href="http://www.civilwar.org/video/our-gettysburg-legacy.html.>Legacy” uses high production values and stunning music to provide testimony for the official hearing to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board over the controversial development of a casino just a half-mile away from Gettysburg National Military Park. The grassroots group, “No Casino Gettysburg” was originally formed in 2005 when Gettysburg local philanthropist David LeVan first proposed the development of a casino near the national park. The group disbanded after LeVan’s proposal failed and was re-formed when the same developer proposed a similar development at a location even closer to the historic park in late 2009. Director/Producer Jeff Griffith noted that gathering volunteers to work on this project was not a strenuous task as he claimed that, “Even those without personal Gettysburg affiliation did not need to be asked twice to get involved and were honored to be able to aid the cause.”
The 9:30 film, kept carefully under wraps until the hearing, was delivered in Hollywood fashion to the eager crowd of 180 listeners as well as select media on 46″ and 55″ flat screen televisions and was received with great enthusiasm, culminating in two rounds of applause. A final decision will not be reached by the board until December, but through the generously donated time and energy of creative professionals such as Sonic Union and Crew Cuts, No Casino Gettysburg has certainly left a lasting impression on not only the Gaming Control Board, but also on the Gettysburg locals. It is clear through this film that this issue rings true in the hearts of not only those who will be directly affected by the development, but anyone who cares about the preservation of our country’s most sacred and historic landmarks.
