Silo Films director Steve Olpin‘s promotional ad for Fuel TV, “Scenic Route” is a quiet reminder of the beauty of nature outside our doors and cities. The piece was shot by Olpin and a crew of two over a week in locations across the southwest.
Just “A guy pushing his skateboard through beautiful places.” Olpin says. Regardless of what others have taken away from the Fuel TV promotion “Scenic Route” a conservation piece, an eye opener, a reconnection to obscured memories, to director Steve Olpin it was always about showcasing the peace and beauty outside our front doors.
“We had the luxury of not having to really sell anything…It started and finished as a very simple concept,” Olpin remembers. “[I] hoped it would encourage you to go outside and look around… push a skateboard, take a walk, ride a bike.” It’s all about, “…an attitude or mood.”
“It was a fun shoot,” Olpin remarks. With a crew of only three members, Steve Olpin as director/writer, Tim Irwin as director of photography and David Law skateboarding; the shoot proceeded with no set schedule or plan. It was just three guys looking for beautiful places throughout the south west. Covering four states in seven days the three men traveled from Point Reyes, CA to Capital Reef National Park, UT. From Big Sur to Zion National Park. And everywhere in between.
“The challenge was that nothing man made could be in the frame,” said Olpin. Dave, the clothes on his back, the skateboard under his feet and the road before him could be the only unnatural objects in the spot. “We ate good food, told stories and stopped every time we saw something beautiful,” Olpin said.
The spot is for Fuel TV which showcases only action sports. The product of the teams adventures is a piece that reminds you where a skateboard can take you.
