Leading Directors Profiles
Profiles of leading directors spanning spots and long-form, including insights from them about their most recent notable work, their creative approaches and aspirations. Included are award nominees and winners, and directors who have put their stamp on successful feature film and other entertainment projects.
JC Chandor, Washington Square Films
He has made an auspicious feature filmmaking debut with “Margin Call,” which earned him an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination, an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, and the Spirit’s prestigious Robert Altman Award. Chandor is about to embark on his second feature, which will star Robert Redford. And after shooting is wrapped on that, Chandor will be available for commercials and branded content via Washington Square Films (which produced “Margin Call”).
Kim Gehrig, Somesuch & Co., London
Her Olympics documentary for Coca-Cola is marking a major splash. Gehring’s career has advanced significantly since she was in SHOOT’s 2009 New Directors Showcase, making a successful transition to the director’s chair after her long tenure as a creative at London agency Mother.
David Gordon Green, Chelsea
An indie filmmaker of note as reflected years back by his winning the Special Jury Prize at Sundance for “All The Real Girls” and being nominated for Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize on the strength of “Snow Angels,” Green has successfully diversified into commercialmaking, making the biggest splash at this year’s Super Bowl with the Chrysler spot starring Clint Eastwood.
Henry & Rel, Moxie Pictures
From their first feature documentary “Catfish”–which is spawning a reality television series on MTV–to the recent box office hit “Paranormal 3,” lauded spots such as Google Chrome’s “Dear Sophie, and the documentary short “A Brief History of John Baldessari” (being screened at this year’s SXSW Festival), Henry & Rel move in and out of multiple disciplines and genres with great dexterity and artistry.
Noam Murro, Biscuit Filmworks
Back in January, Murro won the DGA Award as Best Commercial Director of 2011. He first earned the DGA Award for his body of work in 2004 and has been nominated for the honor six times in his career.
Jake Schreier, Park Pictures
Schreier, known for his work in commercials, made his feature directorial debut with “Robot and Frank,” which marked the first project out of Park Pictures’ feature operation and enjoyed its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it secured a theatrical distribution deal.
