We’re keeping company affiliations and selected work under wraps until the May/June Issue is published on May 20th. In broad strokes, this year’s NDS Class of 2016 is a fantastically diverse group of directors including recent film school grads, agency creatives and experienced cinematographers and editors who are making the transition to director. There are commercials, spec spots, shorts, documentaries, features and branded content.
This mix of work on the SHOOT New Directors Showcase Reel is a reflection of the industry at large–as is SHOOT itself as exemplified in our multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, multi-platform coverage, perhaps most notably our Directors Issues in which profiles of feature, TV and commercial directors reside side by side. Our recent Spring Directors edition in April for example included: “Captain America: Civil War” directors Anthony and Joe Russo who maintain the spot/branded content house Bullitt; this year’s DGA Award winner for commercials, Andreas Nilsson; the reigning DGA Documentary Award winner Matthew Heineman who’s handled for commercials and branded fare by Superprime; music video/commercial director Sophie Muller, who helmed the live Grammy Awards telecast video/spot featuring Gwen Stefani for Target; the directorial duo Daniels (repped for spots by PRETTYBIRD) who won the U.S. Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance this year for “Swiss Army Man”; TV director Tricia Brock (“Orange is the New Black,” “Silicon Valley,” “The Walking Dead,” “Mr. Robot,” “Mozart in the Jungle”) who turned out a groundbreaking web series, “Margot vs. Lily,” for Nike and whose spotmaking home is Hey Wonderful, a sister shop to RSA; and Alejandro G. Inarritu who has won back to back Best Directing Oscars and DGA Awards the past two years for “Birdman” and “The Revenant.” Inarritu’s first DGA Award came back in 2012 for a commercial, Procter & Gamble’s “Best Job.”
As embodied in our coverage and underscoring the relevance of our NDS competition and event, SHOOT’s mission is to connect the worlds of advertising and entertainment while also bringing content creators together with the collaborators who hire them.
On May 27th SHOOT's New Directors Showcase mico-site will go live where the industry will be able to view the NDS Reel along with individual profile pages on each director with headshot, video of selected work, additional Q&As, and contact information.
