Leading Directors & Cinematographers Profile Section
SHOOT interviews leading Directors & DPs spanning features, TV, commercials and branded content for this special section. Included will be backstory and information on notable work that’s hit the recently started film festival circuit signaling the new awards season. Gain insights about their most recent work, their creative approaches and aspirations. Included are award winners and directors who have put their stamp on successful new media and entertainment projects, including some of the industry’s most intriguing cross-over talent.
Here’s a look at some of the far-ranging directorial talent being profiled:
Phil Abraham (a two-time Emmy nominee for “Mad Men”) provides backstory on his first foray into advertising via Recommended Media, a cutting-edge online series for Target.
Ramin Bahrani, an accomplished indie filmmaker who has the Independent Spirit Awards’ Someone to Watch honor on his mantle–and seen his feature “At Any Price” debut at this year’s Venice Film Fest where it was nominated for a Golden Lion–moves into commercials and branded content, landing at a major production house.
Juan Antonio Bayona, lauded at Cannes in 2007 for “The Orphanage,” now finds his poignant, inspiring “The Impossible” prevalent in the buzz for upcoming Oscar consideration.
Jon Cassar, a DGA Award winner for “The Kennedys” and “24,” reflects on directing the ambitious “Daybreak” online series for AT&T and BBDO New York.
Filip Engstrom whose “Color Changes Everything” for Target has been an awards show darling, netting among other honors a primetime commercial Emmy nomination this year.
Ang Lee, an Oscar (“Brokeback Mountain”) and two-time DGA Award winner (“Brokeback Mountain”; “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), discusses “Life Of Pi,” which just debuted at the NY Film Festvial, generating momentum as an Academy Award contender.
Peter Sorcher of Bodega Studios looks back on perhaps the year’s most profoundly positive project to come out of the ad biz–the documentary “I Want To Say,” sparked by a client insight gleaned by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.
Here’s a look at two of the talented Cinematographers being profiled:
Ben Richardson discusses “The Beasts of the Southern Wild” which won the Grand Jury Prize and the Cinematography Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer John Toll (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”) reflects on “Cloud Atlas,” directed by Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer.
Gender Bending / Amazing Race Relations
Women and Minorities in Production. How to best open up opportunities and redefine roles. Facts, figures and forecasts
In this three-part series appearing in SHOOT’s October, November and December issues, we’ll explore the state of gender and race in commercial and entertainment production with insights from female and minority production and post company owners/executives, studio and agency execs and artisans. We’ll share with our readership some fascinating personal journeys, including professional frustrations, triumphs and comical moments along the way. SHOOT searches out the realities and challenges of being female and/or being of color in today’s world of production, and what the outlook is for the future. In this issue, we’ll share industry research on women in production and hear from female company owners and directors.
The Road to Oscar
Hear from directors, DPs, editors and other artisans who have contributed to films that are already generating Oscar buzz, including “Silver Linings Playbook” which won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Life Of Pi” directed by Ang Lee, “The Impossible” starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” directed by Benh Zeitlin, and “Cloud Atlas” helmed by Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer. This is the first of a five-part The Road To Oscar Series which will continue to unfold in our November, December, January & February print issues, touching base with leading artisans behind assorted other leading Academy Award contenders ranging from “Argo” to “Hitchcock” and beyond.
Up & Coming Directors Feature
In this latest installment of our ongoing Up-and-Coming Directors Series, we’ll identify emerging directors whose spec, local, regional or public service work reflects the potential and promise for future filmmaking stardom. In years past, several of these helmers have gone on to earn inclusion in SHOOT’s annual New Directors Showcase at the DGA Theatre in NYC.
While SHOOT is not releasing the names of the directors prior to publication, here’s a rundown on the mix of talent we’ll be covering:
a director whose spec submission to a commercial competition gained airplay on this year’s Super Bowl to great comedic effect
another who’s scored with a spec piece based on an agency creative concept that was intended for the Super Bowl but turned down by the client
a filmmaker whose comedy shorts, including an Apple spot spoof, have found a major audience online
another whose spec PSA is slated to become the centerpiece for a real-world campaign against domestic violence.
A creative collective whose brand of action sports storytelling and penchant for connecting with youth culture is now being brought to the ad marketplace
a director selected for the AFI Directing Workshop for Women and whose short film was recently screened at the DGA Theater as part of the Emerging Cinematographer Awards
and an accomplished filmmaker from Spain who has connected with a production house in L.A. and landed first American spot gig.
This crop of promising young filmmakers merits watching on varied fronts, especially given the fact that several of the helmers featured in our Up-and-Coming coverage over the years have gone on to earn inclusion in SHOOT’s annual New Directors Showcase at the DGA Theatre in NYC.
