Gary C. Bourgeois, one of the film industry’s top re-recording mixers, has joined CSS Studios‘ Todd-AO. The move marks a return to Todd-AO for Bourgeois as he was previously on staff at the sound company from 1985 to 2001. Known for his work in romantic comedies, action films and documentaries, Bourgeois recently mixed the films “The Raven” and “50/50.”

Bourgeois, who has been working as an independent, said that he eagerly anticipates working with other CSS Studios sound artists and having access to the resources of Todd-AO. “I love mixing at Todd-AO because its philosophy is very much akin to mine,” he said. “I also look forward to collaborating with the supervising sound editors at Soundelux, many of whom I’ve worked with before, some, many times.”
Bourgeois’ career dates back to 1969 when he began mixing documentaries, including the Academy Award-winning "The Man Who Skied Down Everest", for Canadian producer Crawley Films. He began mixing in Hollywood in 1976 and since then has accumulated more than 200 feature film credits, including such classics as "Pleasantville" and both Charlie’s Angels theatricals. He counts many accomplished directors as “repeat” clients, including Ivan Reitman, Betty Thomas and Steve Zallian.
Early in his career, Bourgeois worked extensively in television and won an Emmy Award for his work on the National Geographic special “Gorillas”. He won a Cinema Audio Society Award in 2004 for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for the PBS special “The Blues”.
Bourgeois also mixed music early in his career, notably including work with Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, and to this day, he receives files from Nashville artists seeking to utilize his talents mixing and co-producing album projects. “My first love of music and drumming has helped me refine my mix and editing chops for film,” he says. “Dialogue and music taps into my two favorite disciplines, especially when addressing the rhythm of comedies and dramas.”
Experienced in all industry-standard sound mixing and editing platforms, Bourgeois will work out of Todd-AO‘s facilities in Burbank, Hollywood and West Los Angeles. “I have been passionate about sound from the beginning,” he said. “I can’t wait to get to work each day.”
Bourgeois served as a board member for nearly 30 years and is a past president of the Cinema Audio Society.
