Radar Studios just completed two spots for client Hasbro and New York agency UPROAR!. While the spots both introduce exciting new products, they couldnʼt be more different in look, style, or tone.
“All Around Town” is a high-energy live action / VFX spot that introduces the new Rubikʼs 360 puzzle game. Don Hoeg directed the colorful and hypnotizing spot. It features a boy starting to play the Rubikʼs 360 as he leaves his house. Heʼs instantly hooked on the game, flipping and spinning the puzzle in his hands. As the boy plays, the camera begins to spin around as if it were tied to the puzzle. The camera loops around every which way, even doing an entire vertical spin, as it follows the motion of the Rubikʼs 360.
Hoeg commented, “Uproar came to us with a great concept. The rotating camera is really perfect for this spot because not only does it showcase the Rubikʼs 360, a new game that people arenʼt familiar with, but it also gives a clear impression of how the action of the game works. Even more, it helps to build the intensity of the spot, and ultimately, the consumerʼs excitement for the new game.”
But figuring out the best way to control the camera rotations took some serious planning and choreography. “We started doing some movement tests on our own, but were feeling kind of limited by the range of traditional Steadicam movement.” said Hoeg. “We ended up using the AR-Revolution rig for some moves, but we had to
build a completely custom camera rig in order to get the vertical 360.”
The second spot, called “Seeds of Imagination“, for a new Candy Land board game called “Candy Land Sweet Celebration”, features a mother and son planting some colorful candy in the ground. Almost instantly, colorful board pieces sprout from the hole, and their live action world is transformed as they embark on a colorful journey in a super-stylized 3D game-inspired environment.
As theyʼve done in many past projects, RADAR artists from several disciplines joined forces to develop the look and style of the spot. Design director team, the Gray Bros. & Matt took the lead in Art Direction while 3D directors Mark & Sean created the entire 3D environment.
