Recording artist Rachele Royale (CPG Music) collaborated with multi-award winning director TJ Scott, celebrity photographer Dennys Ilic and Gemini Nominated Editor Bert Kish on her latest music video DIFFERENT NOW using only Leica cameras.
Royale, who first came on the scene with her debut album produced by Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard, The Boomtown Rats, Foreigner, Michael Bolton, The Cars, Bryan Adams, Huey Lewis and the News, Billy Ocean, The Corrs, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Nickelback, Muse, Shania Twain), along with Swedish producer Tony Nilsson, won the “My Music Challenge” on 104.3 with Mario Lopez and was featured on VH1’s “Hit The Floor” and in heavy rotation on Sirius XM.
DIFFERENT NOW, written and performed by Royale, is a dark, sultry and tempestuous song that is cinematic in it’s very tone. Listening to the track, an opportunity became clear to director TJ Scott (Gotham, ICE, The Mist, Bates Motel, Queen of the South, Orphan Black, Dark Matter, Damien, Spartacus: War of the Damned…) that it would also be an ideal showcase to demonstrate the video capabilities of Leica’s motion camera.
DIFFERENT NOW is the first music video to be filmed entirely on Leica cameras; a unique advancement for the company that is traditionally known for it’s lightweight and high quality photographic equipment, more traditionally used for street photography. In February 2015 Leica’s design team was awarded an Academy Scientific and Engineering Award for the optical and mechanical design of the Leica Summilux-C lenses which are used for cinematic purposes.
Director TJ Scott notes, “Dennys Ilic and I are fully fledge users of Leica Camera for our still photography work. We have 5 models of Leica digital cameras we use on a daily basis. When we came on board the Rachele Royale ‘Different Now’ music video we decided to shoot it the same way we would capture a stills shoot – rather simply with our own equipment. We shot with a tiny crew and we chose three different Leica camera systems – The Medium Format S-007, the SL, and the Q. Each of these camera is state of the art, though they hadn’t really been used exclusively to shoot a music videos before. We found the footage to exceed even our own high exacting expectations. Our goal was to keep the video super simple and to make it all about Rachele’s beauty – emotions – essences. Rachele told the the story with her face, voice, body language and the Leica cameras coated it flawlessly with remarkable colors and clarity. All three camera delivered amazing footage p and the slow motion footage of the SL was magical. Rachele Royale and the Leica camera system were such a winning combination that we just need to make sure we captured the magic. Such a fun experience all around.”
DIFFERENT NOW Cinematography Dennys Ilic said, “creating a music video is no small feat but was made easy by the amazing talent we had to work with both in front of the lens and behind. TJ’s unique and intimate vision as a director was paired perfectly with Rachele Royal’s dark and edgy song and wonderful voice and screen presence. Filming “Different Now” on new, cutting edge Leica cameras was exciting and created the perfect look for this beautiful and amazing artist.”
“Leica has had a long history with the film and moving picture industry. What started with directors and cameramen using Leica lenses on their movie cameras has evolved significantly, and over the past few years we began making cameras that can produce high-end video content themselves, along with more lenses that are easily adaptable to other video cameras directors are using today. This has made the famous Leica look and visual language more accessible to more cinematographers and videographers” – Roland Wolff, VP Marketing and Corporate Retail
