Fine art photography from prominent members of the American Society of Cinematographers will be featured in City Hearts’ 4th Annual Fresh Focus Art Auction, November 1st, at The Leica Gallery in West Hollywood. Among the items on auction will be an exquisite floral photograph by Russell Carpenter, ASC, Academy Award-winning cinematographer of Titanic.
Others contributing work to the event include Charlie Lieberman, ASC (Once and Again, Heroes); Richard Crudo, ASC (Justified, American Pie), David Darby, ASC (National Geographic, PBS), and two-time Emmy Award nominee James Chressanthis, ASC (Four Minutes, Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows). Donated work includes and Lieberman’s haunting image of a waterfall in Hug Point, Oregon; Crudo’s graceful image of a seagull in flight; Chressantis’ shot of a brooding railway station in Vladivostok, Russia and Darby’s heart-stopping, monochromatic view of Monument Valley, Utah under a blanket of “frozen fog.”
“When I arrived it was 100 degrees,” recalls Darby of his Monument Valley shot. “The weather couldn’t seem to figure out which way to go, and at times neither could I. But once a hole opened up to show some distance and relief, I realized I was in the right place at a very fortunate time. I’ve seen this scene many times, but never like that morning…and probably never again.”
Along with the stills from the ASC cinematographers, City Hearts’ 4th Annual Fresh Focus Art Auction will feature work from many other fine art and celebrity photographers. Jeff Bridges, Doug Kirkland, Herb Ritts, George Hurrell, Kim-Gottlieb Walker, Eli Reed, Anthony Friedkin, Julia Dean, Michael Semaan, Henry Diltz, Helen K. Garber, Stehani Kong Uhler, Nicola Goode and Steve Banks are among the contributors.
Crudo says that he supports City Hearts because of the impact it makes on young lives. “City Hearts does a tremendous job of exposing young people to opportunities otherwise be unavailable to them,” he says. “In doing so, they help reveal talents and proclivities that can lead to lives of a much grander scale with wonderful benefits both for the individual and society at large.”
About City Hearts
CITY HEARTS: For over 30 years, www.cityhearts.org programs have been that very special place for children to grow, experience the Arts, and learn skills that help motivate and enhance school involvement, community engagement, and a sense of caring and compassion for their local and the global communities while encouraging and inspiring children to reach their full potential. Founded in 1984 by Juvenile Court Public Defenders, Bob and Sherry Jason, City Hearts has provided unique training and experiences in the Arts to over 30,000 children since our inception. We believe that intervention and prevention are key elements to nurturing our children to become creative, compassionate and responsible young adults. City Hearts is southern California’s pre-eminent Arts education outreach organization.
Fresh Focus: A New Shot at Life, City Hearts’ Photography program, encourages students to shoot with cameras – not guns. “We teach our students to evaluate their lives and community with a critical eye so that they may, in turn, educate others about their world and tell their ‘story behind the shot’,” Jason explains.
