Lyons Press, an imprint of Globe Pequot Press, is the publisher of “Portraits of the American Craftsman” by Tadd Myers (ISDN# 978-0-7627-9003-6; $29.95 hardcover; 11 x 8.5; 288 pages; full-color throughout), a collection of portraits that celebrate the people and products made in small workshops across the country, with lyrical descriptions of what these people make, who they are, and the traditions embedded in their trades. The book was released in November 2013.
About “Portraits of the American Craftsman”
Award-winning photographer Tadd Myers spent five years on a cross-country journey to capture images of American craftsmen at work. At a time when the public is growing disenchanted by the disposable items that litter the American landscape, the workers in Tadd’s portraits are still making things by hand; each object they create carries the soul of its maker. Tadd’s beautifully rendered photographs and profiles celebrate the American culture of true craftsmanship, which still thrives in all parts of the country: pipe-makers in Tennessee, piano builders in New York, a carousel workshop in Ohio, guitar makers in Texas, hat makers in Chicago, boat builders in Vermont…
The book project began as a commercial assignment to photograph Texas craftsmen carving various wooden moldings for historic buildings. While working on the project, Tadd began to wonder how many other craftsmen in America were working with their hands that very day. “What started as a personal curiosity soon grew into something that feels much more important—an opportunity to record and preserve this aspect of American culture and tell the story of these remarkable people.”

The book is dedicated to Tadd’s father, “Landis Wilson Myers, a true craftsman himself. He was a woodworker, homebuilder, metalworker, guitar player, printing pressman, baseball player, self-made businessman, and a ‘fixer’ of almost anything. My father loved working with his hands and would have felt a very deep connection to this book.” The book is available on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble, and other selected booksellers.
