(www.oinkradio.com)Oink Ink Radio, the creative radio agency with offices in New York and Los Angeles, has announced the winner of its 13th annual <a href="http://(www.oinkradio.com)/2010DeadRadio/index.html”>Dead Radio Contest.
Tommy Troncoso of BBDO/NY is 2010’s grand prize winner. His :60 radio script, “Wright Brothers,” was written for client Amp Energy Drink, but had never been approved for production until Oink Ink selected it as the best script from a crowded field of entries.
After the promise of a “great moment before the great moments in history,” the commercial introduces the famous Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur. They marvel at their first glider, about to take its legendary flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in the year 1900.
We expect both brothers to be desperate for the chance to try out the glider and make historyโbut it’s a windy day, and judging from their bickering, neither one relishes the idea of being flight’s first guinea pig. As the script points out, “Before every moment, there is a moment.”

The <a href="http://(www.oinkradio.com)/2010DeadRadio/index.html”>Dead Radio Contest, now in its 13th year, aims to give a second chance to great radio scripts that clients deemed too risquรฉ, too zanyโor were simply overlooked. Oink Ink takes submissions from writers worldwide, and a panel of industry professionals selects the top spots. The winner is flown to Oink’s studios in either New York or Los Angeles, put up at a luxury hotel, and gets to witness the resurrection of their shelved script as the spot is recorded and brought to life.
Many clients have been so surprised by the resulting spot that they’ve changed their mind and approved the once-dead script for air. Dead Radio spots have even gone on to earn recognition at the Radio Mercury Awards and even Cannes.
Troncoso traveled this month to Oink’s Venice, CA studio to collaborate on the recording and production of the spot; wife Jessica Kleiman joined him for the weekend. Larry Kenny, Dave B. Mitchell, and Roger Craig Smith lent their vocal talents as the announcer and Orville and Wilbur Wright, respectively.
“Working with Oink Ink was really greatโfrom the casting to the record to the editing, they were true professionals and made this spot live up to its potential,” said Troncoso.
This year’s additional Dead Radio winners were Joe O’Neill, Freelance (McLuhan Festival of the Future) who earned the silver prize; and 2009 grand prize winner Neil Blewett, Zig (IKEA), rounding out the top three with the bronze.
