A frequent partner to industry titans like The Walt Disney Company, Netflix, Hulu, Warner Media, Viacom, NBCUniversal and more, Emmy® Award-winning production company and creative agency NuContext is celebrating its 15 Year Anniversary in 2021.
Specializing in the conception, production, and post-production of promotional marketing campaigns and branded content for film and television series, NuContext Founder & Executive Producer Angela Guice is incredibly grateful when she looks back at their work over the past decade-and-a-half: “If you told me in 2006 when we were just starting out that we would be collaborating on campaigns for Fortune 500 brands, producing music videos alongside major artists like Foo Fighters and Lizzo, and I would one day be directing Steven Spielberg, those are just a few of the many unforgettable moments that I could never have even imagined.”
NuContext’s work has earned numerous accolades for their work on productions and creative ideation for top show launches, branded content and 360 marketing campaigns, taking home awards from PromaxBDA, the Tellys, the Addys and more. One major highlight for the company was taking home the 2020 Emmy® for Outstanding Promo/Brand Image for Dreamworks’ She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. “This was a very special win for us as a female-owned business with a commitment to empowering the next generation of diverse and powerful young people,” shares Guice.
That commitment to diversity, inclusion and empowerment is central to Guice’s philosophy as the owner of NuContext. In 2017, NuContext began hosting the “Women On Top” series of networking events for women who work in entertainment marketing, and has plans to resume now that COVID restrictions have lifted. “When we started 15 years ago, we were one of very few female-led production companies,” notes Guice. “To see other female entrepreneurs now thriving, and more women than ever in top executive positions, it's clear that when we support each other there is no limit to what is possible.”
Earlier this year in February 2021, NuContext and Guice launched the HBCU-to-Hollywood Scholarship + Internship Program. Inspired by Guice’s travel to legendary HBCU Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to film a new music video for Lizzo in 2019. It was Lizzo’s vision to celebrate HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) marching band culture and the joy of homecoming. Once the NuContext crew and Director Alan Ferguson landed in Louisiana, it was clear that Southern University was a special place full of creativity with some very talented students. The new internship includes a $5,000 scholarship to cover travel, living expenses and continuing education for a six to eight-week internship opportunity in Hollywood with NuContext. Southern University college student Chaselynn Grant is the first recipient of our NuContext HBCU to Hollywood program. Chaselynn will be joining NuContext in Hollywood this Summer.
Guice is also quick to highlight NuContext’s longstanding relationship with The Walt Disney Company, who has been a client since she founded the company in 2006. “We were incredibly honored that TWDC nominated NuContext as Diverse Supplier of the Year for the 2018 Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) West awards,” notes Guice. “We’re very grateful for their longstanding and steadfast support of a female owned business and continually being a leader in our industry for diversity and representation in front and behind the camera.”
But Guice and NuContext haven’t been limited to playing in the world of film and television, producing music videos for Lizzo, Blink-182, and the Foo Fighters. NuContext has also produced campaigns for Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Nelly, RZA, Big Freedia, and Janelle Monáe.
“I’m truly humbled and forever grateful to have reached this milestone – having survived the ups and downs of our ever-evolving industry, the Great Recession, and now a global pandemic. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart, but thanks to our NuContext team, our crew family and our all our amazing clients that over the years become like family – this is truly the best job I’ll ever have,” concludes Guice. “Thank you to our team and clients — past and present — for believing in NuContext and giving us the ride of our life. I’m looking forward to the next fifteen.”
