Blackmagic Design today announced that new Los Angeles based color correction house Apache Digital has built its two new color correction suites around DaVinci Resolve. The company has already completed a number of international commercial campaigns and long form productions on DaVinci Resolve within a few months of its opening, including commercials for a new Chevrolet campaign.
Formed by co-founders Shane Reed, Steve Rodriguez and LaRue Anderson, Apache Digital has already provided color correction using DaVinci Resolve on a number of national commercial campaigns for Chevrolet, Coke Zero, Kay Jewelers and Lexus among others. They have also completed grading for music videos, a television series and an independent feature that debuted at Telluride, “Three Short Films About Peace.”
Apache Digital provides color correction services to advertising agencies, production and editorial houses, with a focus on commercial productions. Rodriguez and Reed both bring years of color correction experience in commercial and long form productions, including working on campaigns for Toyota, Tide, Mazda, Nike, Nissan and Budweiser, while Anderson has produced campaigns for companies such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Proctor & Gamble.
Apache Digital opened its doors at the beginning of July, 2014.
“When the Chevrolet clients arrived at Apache, they were immediately at ease when they discovered we were grading on DaVinci Resolve. It’s a brand they’ve trusted for years,” said Rodriguez. “After setting some initial looks, the direction changed a bit when we started coloring some close up shots. Keeping in mind that we are selling sheet metal and glass, I quickly set up alternative versions and went in the new direction. The creatives in the room were impressed with the speed and accuracy of Resolve to accommodate the new look with just a few simple moves.
“The tools inside Resolve are powerful and plentiful. Being able to audition several looks in a matter of seconds is key to the creative process. Every client that walks in our grading suites has the same reaction. We are clean, fast and efficient. A project’s delivery schedule is always hectic. With Resolve, the render speeds are stunning. We deliver a viewing codec for the clients to carry out on their laptops and a VFX qualified codec for finishing in just minutes,” continued Rodriguez.
“Resolve easily handles a wide array of media from all cameras, formats and color spaces and can normalize these different media types into one consistent looking piece with minimal effort. As cameras continue to evolve and change, this ability to work with so many different media types effectively makes Resolve stand out in its field,” said Reed. “I primarily grade in the ACES color space which has a very good implementation within Resolve. Furthermore, it's great to be running a system that has such a large user community and robust knowledge base.
“The native remote grading capabilities in Resolve also help us to establish intimate connections with our clients no matter where they are in the world in a way that's reliable and doesn't require our partnering facilities to have expensive fiber infrastructures. And another plus is that because Resolve is so widespread and has a user friendly "light" version, many of our clients' facilities already have a familiarity with the system. This facilitates our conversations with our clients and helps them to better understand our workflow, which makes all our sessions that much smoother,” Reed concluded.
