Director reveals the "deep method to his madness," says McCannโs Bill Wright
It comes as no surprise to his many fans in the advertising industry that Jordan Brady – a veteran spot helmer with more than 1000 commercials under his belt – is sharing many of his hard-won lessons in a new book, Commercial Directing Voodoo: Filmmaking Spells & Production Potions. The guide serves as a complement to Brady’s Commercial Directing Bootcamp, which he has run since 2015, with sold-out seminars in New York, Chicago and Dallas (his latest LA event, April 21, is likewise sold out).
“I was convinced Jordan was making everything up on the spot. But as it turns out, there is a deep method to his madness, and Commercial Directing Voodoo expertly outlines his knowledge in quick, bite-size pieces,” said Bill Wright, Chief Global Creative Officer, McCann Worldgroup. “Any up-and-coming director who wants a future in this exciting, fast-paced business would be well-served to dig in and learn the tricks of the trade from one of the masters of the craft.”
Wright is among the many luminaries from advertising, commercial filmmaking and entertainment who have appeared on Brady’s RESPECT THE PROCESS podcast, via which Brady provides a warm, welcoming environment in which to share insights and anecdotes about their process. In addition to Wright, Brady’s guests have included Judd Apatow, Adam McKay, Morgan Spurlock, Mike Bigelow, Bobcat Goldthwait, John Gammatico, Ric Cantor, LaneTerralever ECD Ian Barry, and Doner Detroit EVP/ECD Chuck Meehan.
It is Meehan who provides the forward to Commercial Directing Voodoo, and who, perhaps, sums it up best: “Every time I work with Jordan, I learn something new,” Meehan writes. “About comedy, storytelling, acting, even how to collaborate more effectively. And all that is in here. All of his experience, knowledge and talent is yours for the taking. This is the bible for commercial directing.”
“I've long denied that I dabble in the dark arts of filmmaking,” quipped Brady, who directs commercials through his LA-based production company, Superlounge. “But after two decades making spots, I decided it was time to come clean.”
