MTI Film will debut CORTEX Dailies v 1.5, the latest version of its groundbreaking all-in-one dailies solution at NAB 2014. The new software includes a variety of upgrades designed to make it faster and easier to copy, color, sync and transcode camera files on-set, near-set and in post-production facilities. It also includes the CORTEX Manifest, a new and innovative tool for managing media and metadata from the set through delivery.
New features of CORTEX Dailies v 1.5 include Copy & Verify, a new integrated tool for fast, fully-managed offloading of camera files from camera cards to both local storage and external backups and archives. The copy tool supports multiple simultaneous copy jobs that all run in the background, allowing the operator to complete other onset processes, such as Color. MD5 checksums are generated during the copy without any impact on copy speed.
Other improvements include a revamped UI for easier clip and file navigation, improved debayering for Sony RAW files, support for DNxHD/QuickTime format,4K monitoring, and support for Blackmagic Design cards for SDI output. CORTEX Dailies Enterprise Edition also includes a new algorithm for high quality resizing to and from any resolution, including up-resing existing media to UHD.
CORTEX Dailies v 1.5 introduces the CORTEX Manifest to address a long-held pain point for on-set and distributed dailies processing. This sidecar file records all media files that have been copied and verified, as well as all color, sync and other dailies metadata. The Manifest can be exported as lightweight XML to be passed from set to post and back, along with the media files. This allows for data discrepancy reporting and reconciliation, along with error-proof communication of color metadata.
“The CORTEX Manifest separates the data from the camera negative file so that it can be used in a non-destructive way,” says MTI Film Product Manager JD Vandenberghe. “Data can be relinked to the file at any later point and all of the work that has been done will be present.”
Vandenberghe adds that the Manifest file can be stored on a network or in the cloud so that it is readily available all parties involved in a production regardless of location. “Keeping files in sync is no problem, even when the set is in one city, the near-set facility is in a second city and the post house is in a third,” he explains. “When color is applied at a post house, the operator can send the Manifest file back to the set so they can enjoy the color there.”
The CORTEX Manifest is stored in an open XML file format in order to encourage other developers to support the format and create new features. CORTEX Dailies v 1.5 will be available for general release following NAB and comes standard on the new CORTEX CarryOn turnkey appliance for on-set dailies and media management. A beta version of the software is currently in use on the television series Longmire.
