The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) will host its 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, September 9th, at Malibu Golf Club in Malibu California. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) and the MPSE’s Ethel Crutcher Scholarship Fund and will be pledged in memory of Charles L. Campbell.
“The golf tournament has become a wonderful opportunity for sound editors to leave their dark rooms and socialize with their peers for a good cause,” said John Larsen, Director Sound Editorial at Fox Entertainment Group and the Honorary Chairman of this year’s event. “It’s rewarding to help young students seeking to build careers in the industry, and it’s especially meaningful to do so in the name of one of the great practitioners of our craft, Chuck Campbell.”
“The selection of John Larson as the honorary chair for the 5th Annual MPSE Charity Golf Tournament was an easy and unanimous choice,” noted Paul Rodriguez, Executive Board Member, Treasurer and Tournament Finance Director. “John is a treasured member of the film sound community and a longtime supporter of the Motion Picture Sound Editors events. We are honored that he has accepted and look forward to his presence and the opportunity to admire his picture perfect golf swing.”
This year’s tournament will have a Hawaiian theme and has been expanded to an all-day event. The fun begins at noon with the “Scramble” Charity Golf Tournament and concludes with an evening luau accompanied by hula dancers in grass skirts. The festivities also include a putting contest with a $5000 cash prize, a helicopter ball drop, a silent/live auction, awards for the “loudest” Hawaiian shirt and “best-dressed” golf cart, and more. Participants in the golf tournament who record a hole-in-one become eligible to win a trip to Hawaii. The MPSE will also inaugurate its annual membership drive at the event.
The MPSE is a non-profit organization composed of professional sound and music editors. It promotes the role of sound and music editors in motion picture and television production, sponsors the annual Golden Reel Awards, and engages in a variety of educational and philanthropic activities. Its Ethel Crutcher Scholarship Fund provides educational funding for aspiring sound professionals.
The Motion Picture & Television Fund is a charitable organization supporting safety net programs and services for the benefit of industry members in times of need.
Charles L. Campbell, who passed away earlier this year, was a 3-time Academy Award-winning Sound Editor and past President and board member of the MPSE. He served as Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) 1984-1987. He won the MPSE’s Career Achievement Award in 2012.
