The Motion Picture Sound Editors tonight presented the 70th Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards in a live ceremony held at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing, MPSE Golden Reel Awards were presented in 20 categories encompassing feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, and student work.
Tom Cruise and Director Joe Kosinksi presented the MPSE Filmmaker Award to pioneering producer Jerry Bruckheimer. (Cruise’s appearance was pre-recorded.) Academy Award® nominated Supervising Sound Editor Al Nelson MPSE and Academy Award winning Supervising Sound Editor Lora Hirschberg presented the MPSE Career Achievement Award to Academy Award nominated Supervising Sound Editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle MPSE.
The opening address was given by MPSE President Mark Lanza who congratulated the nominees and highlighted the organization’s success in promoting the art of entertainment sound. “Sound editors play a crucial role in bringing films, television shows, and games to life,” he said. “This year, we have seen truly incredible sound editing. From the explosive action of blockbusters to the subtle nuances of character-driven dramas, sound editors have shown the power of sound to engage, entertain, and move us.”
The roster of presenters included many legendary sound artists: Oscar winner Tom McCarthy MPSE, two-time Oscar® winner Mark Mangini MPSE, two-time Oscar winner George Watters II, two-time Emmy nominee John Roesch MPSE, two-time Cannes Film Festival nominee Midge Costin MPSE and three-time Emmy Award nominee Bernard Weiser. Presenters also included Award-winning actor Michael O’Neill, who has appeared in several of Bruckheimer’s television shows, and four-time Academy Award-nominated actor Ed Harris. Emmy Awardโwinning actor, comedian, and author Patton Oswalt was host.

Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) Announces 2024 Film Line-Ups
Theย Asian World Film Festival (AWFF)ย announced the festivalโs Main Competition and Short Film lineups; select, noteworthy screenings; special program highlights; and centerpiece film. Celebrating its 10thย anniversary of showcasing Asian film from around the world, AWFF will take place November 13-21, 2024, at The Culver Theater in Culver City, CA. The nine-day festival will present narrative and documentary motion pictures and short films from 27 countries, including four that premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. More than 30 of the screenings will feature live Q&As with the filmmakers, talent, and crew. Georges N.
