Rising Costa Rican vocalist, songwriter and producer MishCatt’s new video for “Another Dimension” premiered Nov. 30 —watch it here.
Co-directed by MishCatt, Warren Alexander and Colin Thomas, the “Another Dimension” video is a fun and playful juxtaposition of performance and VFX melded into energetic eye candy.
Inspired by the DIY aesthetic of 1980s stop-motion animation (including Peter Gabriel’s groundbreaking clip for “Sledgehammer”), “Another Dimension” reveals Mishcatt playing around with graphic overlays of shapes and colors that accentuate her live-action moments. MishCatt worked extremely closely with editors Zack Kash, Dan O’Sullivan and motion graphics artist Colin Kohler of The Uprising Creative to put her personal touch on it, even handcrafting the shapes and shooting the stop-motion footage herself.
Recorded in Sweden and produced by Miike Snow’s Pontus Winnberg, MishCatt’s self-released debut EP, Highlighter, is out now—stream it via Spotify here. The EP—inspired by artists like Prince and Sade as well as her travels in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany and beyond—features six original tracks, along with an additional alternate version of lead single “Another Dimension.”
“This EP represents my first steps as MishCatt,” says Michelle Gonzalez, a.k.a. MishCatt, of the EP. “For me, it’s an analog and digital jungle. When you dive deep into this jungle, the textures in the music will make colors and shapes appear—I want to create a new, space pop atmosphere.”
MishCatt is the union of Gonzalez—Mish—with her fearless, impulsive, mystic alter-ego Catt. Born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica, Gonzalez was brought up by her jazz composer father and actress/singer mother listening to artists like Ella Fitzgerald, João Gilberto, Nat King Cole, Diana Krall and Chet Baker, who remain her biggest inspirations.
At 11, she started hanging around her father’s studio and at age 14, she began performing with him, singing jazz and bossa nova at his shows around Costa Rica. She later formed her own band, Patterns, and continued to tour the country throughout her teens.
After playing with the band for a few years, Gonzalez reconnected with an old family friend who invited her to Sweden to collaborate and record with a songwriter friend. The songwriter turned out to be Winnberg, and the two recorded the entire EP, Highlighter, together. Gonzalez is currently in the studio working on new music, set for release in 2017.
