Melissa Silverman, a New York director who always incorporates her sense of humor into her work, truly took advantage of the opportunity to create this year’s Soul Train Awards promo campaign.
Creative Director, Kesime Bernard and writer Kim Nguyen, from the Centric team created a concept that paid homage to vintage Soul Train styles and dances to form a new Soul Train environment โ The Soul Train Station. The spots also marked the next era of the awards show. This year the Soul Train Awards moved to a new home, BET’s Centric – a brand-new music and lifestyle network. Complete with a logo redesign by illustrator Tristan Eaton, the spots boldly reintroduced the Soul Train Awards brand after its two-year hiatus.
Silverman’s creativity and quirkiness helped make a series of hilarious and memorable spots advertising the 2009 Soul Train Awards, from Atlanta on November 29th at 9/8 central on Centric and BET. The award show to be hosted by Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard and Oscar-nominated Taraji P. Henson, the incredibly talented and compatible duo who were also featured in Silverman’s ads. The combination of the hosts’ witty banter with the surrounding extras’ retro dance moves create a funny and entertaining promo piece. The campaign provides a throwback to the original Soul Train series. The ads are vibrant, fun and perfectly nostalgic, encouraging all of its viewers who miss the dancing and good times from the series’ glory days to go watch the awards for many more classic Soul Train moments. Thanks to Silverman’s work, the Soouuuuul Train has officially arrived.
