Magical Iguana Productions and Let Us Entertainment will co-produce the romantic comedy, “Maybe This Time,” the production companies announced today. Starring veteran film and stage actor Mel England and penned by freshman scripter Richard DeFonzo, “Maybe This Time” is a gay romantic comedy about Robert Hunter, a wildly successful Liza Minnelli impersonator in New York City, who’s looking for Mr. Right. The only problem is that no one wants to date a drag queen.
Based on his life as one of the most celebrated Liza Minnelli impersonators, DeFonzo wrote “Maybe This Time” not just with his own experience in mind, but also to shed light on the challenging love lives of all female impersonators. “Sometimes, even within the LGBTQ community, it’s hard to find guys who can see beyond the dress and makeup,” DeFonzo said, adding, “It’s personal. So many of us in the drag world experience this. Love is love, no matter who you are, or what you do for a living.”
England (“Ron and Laura Take Back America”), is set to star as Peter, the love interest of Robert (yet to be cast), and will also executive produce. “I just fell in love with the script. It's so human – everyone wants love. We’ve never seen a film like this – it’s a part of the story that has never been told.”
Tony award winning Broadway producer, Sue Vaccaro (“Clybourne Park”) and Anton Khachaturian (“RuPaul’s Drag U”) are involved as producer and associate producer respectively.
Producers are in talks with Chad Michael’s (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), Vincent De Paul (“House of Cards”) and Liza Minnelli to join the production, which is scheduled to begin filming in 2017.
