The Martin Agency announced today that it will host its first ever art exhibition, entitled “RE:.” The exhibit will formally open the new 2,500 square feet of gallery space on the newly renovated second floor of the agency.
John Norman, chief creative officer of The Martin Agency, worked with Heather Russell, an independent curator, to gather the work of eight multi-media innovative artists. The exhibit examines the juxtaposition of our obsession with social media and our simultaneous longing for tradition.
“This exhibit will inspire what we do,” said Norman. “Everything we think we know has been flipped on its head. Our industry is being repurposed and reorganized. As creative communicators, we have to reconsider and rethink our end product daily.”
Each piece of art speaks to the juxtaposition of tradition and modern day immediacy. Featured artists will include Dalton Ghetti, who “sharpens” pencils into sculptures using only a sewing needle and a razor blade, and SIBLING, a London-based fashion collaborative that created Scare Isle Knit Monster, a full-body suit that was part of the A/W 2010 London Men’s Fashion Week. The Knit Monster is a unique 5-part cashmere “coverall” piece replete with a balaklava and raffia Mohawk, which assures the wearer anonymity in a post-modern world obsessed with image and identity. Charles McGill’s work, vintage golf bags covered with internet keyword-search images relating to race and social identity, will be on loan from a prominent collection belonging to William and Pamela Royall of Richmond.
“These artists embody the type of thinking we are doing at the agency,” Norman continues. “We are socializing in new ways and having innovative conversations, forming pop culture in emerging media and playing out brand experiences in art forms.”
The exhibit will be open to agency employees beginning on June 23rd, and will remain at the agency for a number of months. It will be the first of many exhibitions to fill the gallery space.
