MAKE + MODEL has launched a new documentary division that represents their commitment to unscripted and branded content. The initiative will serve as the foundation for the company’s continuing interest into documentary projects. The company noted that unscripted content is becoming integral to the success of creative studios working in broadcast advertising.
The division, headed by Executive Producer Mark Hyatt, is off to an ambitious start, having two documentaries already in production. A project helmed by director Marcos Zavitsanos, will be a feature entitled “What’s for Lunch?” that will examine a healthy school food initiative across the nation. The second project by director Russell Bates will be partially funded by the Annenberg Foundation and explore the “Backwards Beekeeper’s,” a group of organic, treatment-free beekeepers based in Los Angeles. MAKE + MODEL will co-produce the film with Max Wong at Pink Slip Pictures.
The new division is looking to execute several additional projects this year while continuing to increase the number of directors represented on their roster. As Executive Producer George Cawood noted, “The idea stemmed from the Goetz Brothers, who aside from being distinguished commercial directors, are also documentary enthusiasts (their film ‘Malibu Sloshbox Derby’ won the Malibu International Film Spirit award). The growing trend of unscripted entertainment and branded content is a testament to the demand for compelling narratives. In turn, our plan is to seek content that is authentic, captivating and socially conscious while leveraging our client’s objectives.”
