The Lab Sydney is proud to announce its recent completion of visual effects and post production on the Australian action-film “Tomorrow When the War Began” directed by Stuart Beattie. The film was released nationally on Thursday 2nd September.
“Tomorrow When the War Began” is based on the John Marsden novel of the same name. The story focuses on a group of teenagers who return from a camping trip to find an unknown army has invaded their town and their country. Visit for cinema trailer www.twtwb.com.
As a lead VFX vendor The Lab delivered 232 visual effects shots out of a total of 416 with a multi-skilled and multi-talented team. In addition, the facility completed the entire post production comprising rushes, scanning, editorial, digital intermediate grade and the end-title sequence.
Director, Stuart Beattie valued the capable and skilled artists housed at The Lab saying “I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked with The Lab on ‘Tomorrow When the War Began.’ The artists were amazingly talented, profoundly experienced, and firmly dedicated to helping filmmakers achieve their vision. Visual effects, grading, editing – The Lab has everything any filmmaker could want.”
Prue Fletcher, The Lab Sydney’s Head of Film and TV who oversaw the entire VFX and post production on the film added “we had a dedicated and passionate team working on this film, it was a huge collection of talented individuals involved. It takes everyone to hit their marks to ensure we deliver quality and authenticity, and The Lab’s VFX artists and producers were absolutely committed to this project with stunning results.”
VFX Supervisor and industry veteran Chris Godfrey oversaw the production’s VFX, working with a total of three VFX vendors. The Lab’s VFX team was headed by VFX Supervisor Tony Cole and CG Supervisor Clinton Downs. Cole and Downs oversaw hundreds of VFX shots which included complex matte painted environments and an array of complex blue screen shots.
It was a busy time for The Lab during the post production on this film, with seven Australian television series, an Australian feature film and dozens of TV commercials completing post and visual effects at the same time.
When the facility won the bid, Prue Fletcher facilitated a custom build to accommodate the Tomorrow production and editorial team at TheLab. The facility became a haven for the team who were given three edit suites and offices in a fully secure part of the building.
“Having the production team, editor and VFX supervisor in the one building was unique.” says Fletcher. “Everything was contained under one roof, from initial colour grading rushes through to the deliverables.”
According to Chris Godfrey the whole process was seamless “we could regularly sit and work with the VFX Supervisor, the animators and compositors, watch preview screenings in the DI theatre or pop over to the edit suite all within one building. It really helped the production to be efficient. It was exceptional.”
The Lab Sydney who’s previous feature film credits includes Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” Shirley Barrett’s “South Solitary,” and “Two Fists One Heart” commenced work on the Omnilab Media “Tomorrow When the War Began” in November 2009. The Lab has completed post and visual effects on Channel Nine’s “Sea Patrol Series 4;” “Rescue Special Ops Series 2;” the ABC’s new legal drama “Rake;” Foxtel’s fantasy-drama “Spirited;” Freehand Entertainment’s successful children’s series “Penelope K, By the Way;” and Channel Nine’s highrating third instalment of “Underbelly โ The Golden Mile.”
