Los Angeles cinematographer Kris Kachikis has been selected Cinematographer of the Year in the 2011 Mobius Awards international advertising competition. The Photographer of the Year award goes to Adam Hinton of London.
Both were nominated by panels that included Mobius Awards board members and other professionals. They were recognized for the quality and range of their work.
Kachikis’ credits include many music videos for stars such as Elvis Costello, Eminem and Sean Lennon and commercials for clients that include Levis, Pepsi, MasterCard and Motorola.
Kachikis, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1990 with a degree in Radio, Television and Film and English-Creative Writing, is known for his use of natural light photography.
His last film, Sundance Film Festival entry “American Son” for director Neil Abramson, starring Nick Cannon, Tom Sizemore and Melonie Diaz, inspired “a deserved salute to cinematographer Kris Kachikis’ sharp scopings” from The Hollywood Reporter‘s Duane Byrge. Variety‘s Justin Chang also said “American Son was shot primarily on location in Bakersfield, whose sun-bleached exteriors are ably captured by Kristian Kachikis’ handheld camerawork.”
Among his film and documentary work are “Chocolate Tour,” directed by Spike Jonze and Steely Dan in Concert. He is represented in Los Angeles by Dattner Dispoto and Associates.
Hinton, who began shooting photos at age 12 with a basic SLR camera, has combined his skills as a photographer with his interest in politics to produce an extensive range of works.
Hinton recalls that as a youngster, he “became fascinated with a new way of looking at the world and the ability to record things of importance to me. It was a way of marking out my world.”
“Studying photojournalism in the ’80s enabled me to articulate my feelings, beliefs and values into a visual medium that I could communicate to others,” Hinton notes on his website. “I would take photos at all the demonstrations I went to: anti-apartheid, anti-nuclear, the miners’ strike and the picket lines at Wapping. I hoped, and still do, that my images could portray something of the way we live today, how each action has a reaction, that nothing is without cause or response.”
Hinton’s recent work ranges from a Nike 2012 Campaign working for Wieden + Kennedy, to a San Miguel, Spain, shoot for Saatchi & Saatchi and coverage of Ladies Day at Ascot. His clients include British Airways, BBC, BMW, Coca–Cola, and Sony.
In 2011, exhibits of his work included IPA Best in Show, Splashlight Studios, New York; Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art, Turku, Finland; Sony World Photography Awards 2011, Somerset House, London, and Voices for the Alternative Congress House, Trades Union Congress, London.
Mobius Awards recognizes outstanding work in Brochure/Book, Cinema-In-flight, Direct, Mixed Media Campaign, New Media, Online, Outdoor, Package Design, Point-of-Purchase, Print, Radio, Television and Student. In 2009, the competition added Image awards.
He is represented by Wyatt-Clarke & Jones, London.
