Jonathan Notaro and his colleagues at international production company and design studio Brand New School (BNS, www.brandnewschool.com) are very proud to announce the addition of Justin Fines to the staff of their East Coast studio as Associate Creative Director.
Originally from Detroit, Justin began attending the College for Creative Studies in 1994, and in 1997, he launched his own design studio named DEMO. Inspired by Detroit’s electronic dance music scene, he immediately began creating flyers for underground events, which quickly led to collaborations with legendary record labels and other major players, prompting his relocation to Chicago. In 2004, he moved to New York to begin a two-year stint as Psyop’s art director. Along with designing the distinctive Psyop branding and logo, he also directed spots for Aeroplan, Colorado Lotto, Marshalls, Nickelodeon UK and others, while contributing his talents to the Psyop ‘Anthem’ project described by CoolHunting.com as “Genius.”
Justin returned to DEMO full-time in 2006, while also starting a two-year placement as Visiting Professor of Communications Design at the Pratt Institute. Through DEMO, Justin has published and been featured in dozens of books and magazines — most recently, Michael Perry’s highly regarded "PULLED: A Catalog of Screen Printing." Justin’s original designs have been honored by major design institutions and publications worldwide, including snowboards for Rome and Burton, and apparel and graphics for Adidas, Nike, Incase, Sixpack, Threadless, and ZooYork, to name but a few.
Over the years, Justin has also freelanced for most major design studios in New York, and many in Los Angeles. "I’m excited for the opportunity to lead a team of talented designers and to take on new challenges on set," he said.
"Justin is a brilliant designer and teacher, and he understands the value in fostering talent and being in a collaborative environment," said Jonathan. "He brings a lot of experience, and he really wants to make everyone’s experience at BNS better, push things further, and try new things, which is what the job requires."

“Ǝvolution” Comes Full Circle At The Chelsea Film Festival
The Chelsea Film Festival, running from October 16th through October 20th, 2024, at Regal Cinemas here in Union Square, is set to host the East Coast premiere of Ǝvolution, a thought-provoking experimental micro-short film that proves big ideas can come in small packages and in perfect circles.
In just 1 minute 16 seconds, this cinematic gem by Award-Winning Director Romina Schwedler, with original music by Argentine Composer Ignacio Montoya Carlotto, explores a cycle as old as time: life leads to progress, progress leads to destruction, and destruction, well, leads back to life. But is this vicious circle unbreakable? Ǝvolution suggests the answer is yes, unless we decide to open our eyes.
Inspired by the overwhelming number of recent events that threaten human existence, Ǝvolution, possibly the shortest film in this 12th edition of the festival, plays out entirely through the symbolism of circles, cleverly illustrating —in the blink of an eye— the repeating patterns of history, and confronting viewers with the uncomfortable truth that our so-called “progress” may, in fact, be guiding us to our own ruin.Premiering at the Regal 14 Union Square, New York City, on October 18, 2024, at 11 a.m., Romina Schwedler's micro-short, featuring Leah Young with cinematography by Alan J. Carmona, will be sure to spark conversations longer than the film itself! Forcing viewers to reconsider the true meaning of evolution, not just as a biological process, but as a reflection of our collective journey as humans.
