The Leo Awards presented Jon Joffin with the prize for Best Cinematography in a Feature Length Drama for “Alice,” the SyFy’s channel’s adaptation of “Alice In Wonderland” on Saturday.
The Leo Awards honor the best in British Columbian television and film production and are comparable to the Golden Globes in their scope. Alice won eight of the 13 awards, for which it received nominations.
Joffin’s version of Alice updated the original Lewis Carroll tale by creating an urban Wonderland of towering skyscrapers and flashy casinos. Utilizing a unique color palette for each scene, Joffin develops tones of ponderous theatricality, illuminating the sets and characters with nuanced style. Directed by Nick Willing (The River King), Alice stars Tim Curry, Kathy Bates and Charlotte Sullivan as Alice.
In 2008, Joffin earned Emmy and ASC Award nominations for Outstanding Cinematography for his depiction of a country in turmoil on the TV miniseries The Andromeda Strain. He also received a Gemini Award nomination for Best Photography on the TV servies Crusoe.
Joffin calls Vancouver home, while shooting all over Canada and the United States. He is represented by Dattner Dispoto and Associates in Los Angeles.
