A cloud-sourced Documentary film will chronicle the trials and tribulations of launching a global transmedia Basketball I.P. (intellectual property), simply referred to as Hanukkah Hoops. The idea stems from deep Jewish roots that pervade the 1930’s early days of organized basketball back in Jewish neighborhood basketball pockets in cities like Brooklyn, New York City, and Philadelphia to a present day new spin where the Hanukkah Holiday will become the annual backdrop to tournaments that will spring up over the next few years leading up to the 2017 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Presumably, the film would cull and consolidate many hours of video submissions, live filming of events, and key interviews to culminate in a 2016 documentary release. The film endeavors to capture the groundwork of the first invitational event of 2012 to the tournament’s modest rise in popularity and acceptance in 2015 to eventually showcase several Jewish and non-Jewish players of all ages, races, and religions competing in Hanukkah Hoops around the world to globally promote peace through play. nn
nnThe first Hanukkah Hoops Invitational Showcase: Basketball Battle of the Bay, a 5-on-5 competitive basketball event, has been scheduled for 12/9/12. Though the first candle (and shamash) will be lit on Saturday night, at sundown on Shabbat, the Hanukkah Hoops basketball will be tipped the following afternoon at 4pm on the first full day of Hanukkah, on Sunday, December 9. nnThis first, one-day-only event, will be hosted at the JCC San Francisco (3200 California Street @ Presidio Street, San Francisco, CA). CLICK HERE for details.nnThe first game will feature a “Youth Division” game that will be comprised of Seventh and Eighth Grade boys (Tip-Off at 4:00pm). The second game of the doubleheader will be an “Open Divison” game to be comprised of mostly of 20-year-old and 30-year old invited players. It will feature some recognizable Bay Area names, many of whom have represented San Francisco, the East Bay or the United States at the JCC Maccabi Games, the Pan American Maccabi Games or the Maccabiah Games in Israel. The Hanukkah Hoops Invitational will pit two San Francisco-based teams against two other teams namely comprised of players from the East Bay, as well as some players from the South Bay and North Bay. These pairings will instill a basketball battle of the bay theme. Another nice tie-in besides Coach Barry Kleiman‘s 2013 Maccabiah Games participation this coming Summer in Israel, is the fact that the San Francisco community is proud to be a part of the 30th anniversary year for JCC Maccabi United States which began in 1982.nnPreviously billed as "a tournament for the rest of us," according to founder Jay Randy Gordon: “The Hanukkah Hoops Invitational” hopes to further expand the event in 2013. We are humbled to have the involvement of 2013 Maccabiah Games Juniors Basketball Coach Barry Kleiman (a native of the Philadelphia area which was historically key to the rise of 1930’s basketball in the Jewish community). The teams, known as the First Four of the Hanukkah Hoops Invitational, will be special, just like the four sides of the spinning dreidel. This was truly pulled together through a ‘Share The Ball’ mentality that is exuded and exemplified by Coach Kleiman.”nnAs the Hanukkah Hoops Invitational ramps up to be an annual event, the obvious idea is to further promote that a “great tournament started there” where an analogy can be made to the Hanukkah symbol, the dreidel. Like the wooden courts on which this great game of basketball was built, the original wooden dreidel is comprised of four letters of the Hebrew alphabet, Nun, Gimel, Hei, Shin, and together, they form the acronym for – A great miracle happened there – which refers to the miracle occurring in the land of Israel. Instead of playing for traditional winnings of chocolate, gelt, pennies, or raisins, the Hanukkah Hoops First Four will simply play for pride – and for an even loftier ideal tied to basketball, which is promoting peace through play.nnHanukkah Hoops founder Jay Randy Gordon is also working with the JCC San Francisco for a between games menorah lighting and he also hopes to have a trick shot competition, a half-court heave, and a timeline longshot shootout following the two games. Following both basketball games and the post-game friendly competitions, there will be a group pizza party for the kids, players, and parents to mark the two games on Night Two of Hanukkah. nnIn 2011, Gordon announced an Advisory Board which included media icon Leigh Steinberg, sports agent Steve Baker, SF Bay Area Attorneys John D. O’Connor and Tad Devlin, Beth Schnitzer, Bill Criswell, Dave Rosenberg, Dr. Sanford Sandy Rosenberg, Doniphan Blair, and Neal Pollack (author of the e-book, Jewball). Coach Barry Kleiman was added to the Board in 2012. Kleiman truly stepped up his efforts in joining a board that believes this idea can flourish. Gordon remarked: “These extraordinary individuals wield some serious yet socially responsible influence in and around the Bay Area. They will be helpful in developing Hanukkah Hoops looking ahead to 2013 and beyond.”nnHanukkah Hoops also endeavors to raise awareness and hopes for some mitzvah donations to Roots of Peace, a San Rafael, California–based organization founded by Marin County resident Heidi Kuhn, dedicated to the eradication of land mines worldwide. The hope for Hanukkah Hoops is that positive social media messaging will ensue, and that a 2016 documentary will emerge on the subject, through cloud-sourced, short-form videos and mobile uploads which permeate the social graph.
