The producer’s of “Little Big Top” announce today that it is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The feature was originally released in 2008 to a limited, national theatrical engagement. In early 2013 it began streaming nationwide on Netflix. Several months later “Little Big Top” survived the platform’s much publicized purge of over 2000 titles. The film stars legendary horror film actor Sid Haig, Jacob Zachar and Mel England, and was directed by Ward Roberts.
“It’s so awesome ‘Little Big Top‘ is streaming on Amazon Prime, especially after we made the Netflix cut!” says England, who plays the ubiquitous town drunk and the comedic foil to Haig’s character. England, known on both stage and screen, was acclaimed for the international tour of his Off Broadway one-man show “Swimming with the Polar Bears” which he also performed at the UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen.
Streaming indie projects on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon is proving more difficult lately. With the wild success of Kevin Spacey’s Netflix original series “House of Cards,” the company and its competitors are shifting focus to streaming original content and studio films. Therefore, streaming is quickly becoming a coveted status for indie filmmakers. “Now millions of people can discover ‘Little Big Top,'” said the film’s director Ward Roberts. “At no other time and place in the history of cinema could a tiny, unknown film like ours reach that kind of audience.”
As Indie film distribution enters a new era, Roberts is a pioneer. “Little Big Top” started as a standard theatrical limited distribution with DVD release and a standard mail order rental on Netflix. However, for Roberts, getting the film to streaming is the result of a several years of work. His latest feature “Dust Up” starring Amber Benson (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) premiered in 2012 on iTunes as one of the top downloads. Simultaneously available on Amazon Prime, Google Play, and Vudu, it also had a theatrical release in various US cities via TUGG, the social networking site. It is currently in negotiation for worldwide distribution.
Haig, a veteran star of screen and TV for over 40 years, is mainly known to horror film fans as Captain Spaulding in the Rob Zombie films “House of a 1000 Clowns” and “The Devil’s Rejects.” Normally cast in horror genre films, in ‘Little Big Top,’ Haig takes on a part with a touching side, a sad down-and-out circus clown trying to return to his small hometown. England ends, “Sid Haig gives the performance of his career — now his fans everywhere will have another chance to catch it.” .
