Cinematographer David Morrison’s film EASIER WITH PRACTICE, written and directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, won the Grand Jury Award at the 11th Annual CineVegas Film Festival, held June 10-15 at the Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas.
Visual Risks
Morrison and Alvarez chose a risky visual style for a subject that is essentially unfriendly to the cinematic narrative–that of phone conversations. Impressively long camera takes unfold to allow the audience time to absorb and connect with the film’s protagonist and his search for intimacy. Click here to view trailer
Director of Photography David Morrison: “Our film demanded a certain stillness and meditative quality so that Davy’s (Brian Geraghty) character / state of mind could be absorbed. My feeling is that if stillness is the need then the compositions better be compelling and layered so one’s interest can be held for periods of unbroken time. There can be predictability to the photography for a film. One can anticipate where the action or blocking will go based on the composition. The solutions for covering scenes are so ingrained and familiar that they become almost deadening to the audience. I really wanted to approach this as a still photographer would approach a subject or idea while maintaining a seamless quality to the images.”
