The creator of the popular international TV and web series "Child of the 70’s" announces that Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland will join the cast in season five of the comedy. “Child of the 70’s” is a parody of and a loving homage to the sitcoms that series creator Michael Vaccaro loved growing up in the 1970s. Vaccaro (“A Play on Words”) portrays the central protagonist of the series, Carlo Perdente, a wannabe actor who is trying to break into the entertainment business by being an assistant to the narcissistic and egomaniacal 1970s TV star KiKi Lawrence played by Ann Walker (“Sordid Lives”).
In season five Carlo gets a role in a Broadway show and moves back to NYC where it all began. And, there's a major shakeup in the Perdente family. Kirkland will play "Ivana Bogdanovitch," the diva director of the play and unfortunately for Carlo, he and Ivana do not see eye-to-eye. “Ivana is loosely based on Uta Hagen, with a little bit of Sandy Dennis and Geraldine Page thrown in,” says Vaccaro. “An eccentric, over-the-top, well-respected acting guru turned director.”
“Ivana is great character,” says Kirkland. “She’s a diva and I love to play divas!” Kirkland’s character was written specifically for her according to Vaccaro because he’s wanted her in the show since the beginning. Kirkland is best known for starring in “Anna” for which she won a Golden Globe and garnered an Oscar nomination. She has starred in over of 200 films and television shows.
Sherri Lewis also joins the cast as “Tiffany Welles” a spoiled, vapid, Barbie Benton type and is one of the actresses in the Broadway show. Lewis, also known as Sherri Beachfront, was the lead singer of the 80’s pop group Get Wet which had a chart topping hit with “Just So Lonely.”
In addition to Vaccaro, Kirkland and Lewis returning cast members include: Susan Olsen, Sheena Metal, Judy Tenuta, Bruce Vilanch, Terry Ray, Ann Walker, Randy Jones, Chuck Saculla, Carole Ita White, Greg Lucey, Laura Harden, Gina Hecht, Charlene Geisler, Charlotte Robnett, and Mel England.
“Child of the 70’s is directed by Tom Pardoe (“It’s Your Move) and co-written by Terrence Moss. Shooting for season five begins this fall.
Every season of “Child of the 70’s” has featured many prolific actors from film and television during that decade including Susan Olsen who played Cindy Brady in “The Brady Bunch,” Ted Lange who played bartender Isaac Washington on “The Love Boat” and Donna Pescow in the title role on "Angie" and Annette in "Saturday Night Fever.” Additional cast members from the era included Gina Hecht ("Mork and Mindy"), Amy Linker ("Square Pegs"), Carole Ita White ("Laverne and Shirley") and the original Cowboy from The Village People, Randy Jones.
