Award-winning colorist Joe Finley, whose credits include the HBO series Game of Thrones, has joined Chainsaw, a division of The SIM Group. A veteran with more than 20 years of experience in features and episodic television, Finley will work out of a DI theater at Chainsaw’s Hollywood facility, newly equipped with a state-of-the-art Da Vinci Resolve grading system. He is currently grading the fifth season of Game of Thrones.
“Joe is one of the most talented colorists working today and enjoys the trust of some of the industry’s top directors and cinematographers,” said Chainsaw co-founder Bill DeRonde. “We’ve been big fans of his work on Game of Thrones and are very excited to have him here.”
Finley arrives from Modern VideoFilm, where he had been a senior colorist for nearly two decades. His credits encompass more than 100 feature films, including such acclaimed titles as The Descendants¸3:10 to Yuma and Walk the Line. A three time HPA Award nominee, he won the HPA Award for Television Color Grading in 2012 for the Game of Thrones episode The Prince of Winterfell. He began his career at Laser Pacific.
In discussing his move to Chainsaw, Finley said he was attracted by its reputation for excellence, expansive resources and support staff, and commitment to growth. “The facility has a great location and a great vibe, and caters to everything my clients ask for,” he noted. “I want to help Chainsaw to continue to grow its scripted television department, and to seek out more very high-end scripted television shows.”
Saying that the best part of his job is “collaborating with other creative people,” Finley asserted that there has never been a better time to work in scripted television. “Creative people enjoy more freedom in television today,” he said. “A lot of great cinematographers and directors are moving to TV today because they want that freedom.”
