Technology is also making 3D viable in special venue, out-of-home experiences–we’ll examine that arena as well. What does the the entrance of traditional talent agencies and entertainment companies into the marketing sector mean for marketers and traditional commercial production suppliers? We’ll canvas such issues and compare hybrids vs. specialty houses, in-house resources vs. and/or complemented by partnerships, a work-for-hire model vs. content equity. Many are grappling with the business model for sponsored content, how to leverage and monetize it properly. But at times lost in the shuffle is the power of such content to do good and contribute to the betterment of our society. In this session we examine the anatomy of NBC’s “Child Hunger Ends Here,” a program that brought together Al Roker Entertainment, NBC, Feeding America and ConAgra Foods. During the airing of the program, ConAgra commercials ran that were directed by Joe Pytka. How does a project get packaged to raise not only public awareness of an issue but also funds to help solve a profound societal problem? Hear from Al Roker and others involved in the process and see what lessons are to be learned that can be applied to the sponsored content world.

3:20-4:05pm: Questions & Answers From The Director’s Chair
Moxie Pictures’ director & president Danny Levinson goes one-on-three for a very unique live on-stage interview session. A directorial duo, Henry & Rel, who first gained widespread acclaim at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. A solo helmer, Lena Beug, whose initial recognition came in part from inclusion in SHOOT’s 2006 New Directors Showcase. These three rising star directors will provide insights into their careers, responding to questions from veteran director, Danny Levinson, whose company Moxie Pictures signed them for commercials and sponsored content.
What did Levinson see in Henry & Rel’s work that would translate well into spots and longer form branded fare? What was it about director Lena Beug that caught Moxie’s eye? What goes into a director’s thought process when choosing a production company? What strategies were devised to garner not only work, but more importantly the right work for these up-and-coming directors? Where is sponsored content headed and what opportunities will it afford filmmakers as brands look to connect with people in different ways? What else emerges when a director interviews directors about the art and craft of filmmaking, creative concerns, and staying relevant in an evolving, increasingly competitive marketplace is anyone’s guess but we expect the session to be interesting, informative and fun. As for Levinson’s interviewing chops, they are on display during his audio podcast, “Moxie Radio,” which launched earlier this year on iTunes. In the bimonthly podcast, Levinson engages high-profile guests from the filmmaking world in casual yet thoughtful conversations on varied topics.

About The New Directors Search / The New Directors Showcase Reel
Each year SHOOT conducts a worldwide search to discover the best up-and-coming directors who, based on their initial work, show promise to soon make major positive contributions to advertising and/or entertainment in its traditional and emerging forms. The search is conducted by SHOOT’s editorial staff with input from advertising agency creative directors & heads of production, as well as production company heads and established directors. This year’s search was conducted from January 1-April 4th, 2011. Over the years, there have been assorted cases of New Directors Showcase helmers going on to gain industry prominence. Consider David Gray who was in the 2005 Showcase and a year later went on to be nominated for the DGA Award as best commercial director of the year. (Gray was at Hungry Man when included in the ’05 Showcase and has since moved over to Station Film). And last year Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film Taking Chance, the same film which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT’s ’08 New Directors Showcase.
