Creative Director Michael Waldron's third and final installment of "The Exquisite Corpse Project" trilogy made its debut at motion 2016 conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in June. A collaborative effort among leading artists in the motion design industry, "The Exquisite Corpse Project X," will be screened in Los Angeles and New York this summer.
In recognition of motion conference's 10th Anniversary,"The Exquisite Corpse Project X" participants included current and past motion speakers: Alberto Scirocco (leftchannel), Ariel Costa (BlinkmyBrain), Karin Fong (Imaginary Forces), Greg Gunn (Blind), Gregory Herman, Erica Haowei Hu, Fionna Mariani (Trollbäck + Company), Paul Mitchell (The Mill+), Vinicius Naldi (The Mill+), Kurt Hartman (Nick), and Marcel Ziul (State Design). New additions included: Buster Design, mike g, Charlie Company, and animator Ryan O'Hare. Sound design and score was created by Stephen Hermann, Creative Director & Founder of Explosion Robinson.
"This year's artists included studios form around the globe. At one time or another, we have all competed with each other," says Creative Director Michael Waldron, currently the SVP CD Art + Design for Nickelodeon, Nick@Nite, TV Land. "It was pretty special to bring everyone together to work on something that was purely a passion project – no strings attached. Even though this was my third year directing, I never know how it will ultimately turn out. It was exciting to see work being done in so many different mediums – from live-action to motion graphics to stop-motion animation. Truly an amazing experience. In the end, to see everyone's reaction to the final piece at motion 2016 was really rewarding."

leftchannel was one of 14 of the top studios and designers in the world selected again this year for "The Exquisite Corpse Project X." Led by Creative Director/Founder Alberto Scirocco, the leftchannel team created three seconds for the project, which features the company's signature cel animation, 2D and 3D animation, as well as live-action: https://vimeo.com/169898613
"While collaboration in the artistic world is pretty common; within our industry, unfortunately, it is not," says Scirocco. "We wish there more were opportunities for community building. We hope this project inspires a greater sense of community. When Michael called with the opportunity, I was excited to collaborate. Getting the top (and most competitive) studios and designers in the world together to collaborate on a project like this is a great accomplishment for Michael."
Elaine Montoya, motion conference co-founder, described the project as "unequivocally the best collaborative motion design and live-action project to date by some of the top creatives in the industry." Montoya went on to say, "Collaborations among competitors are usually unheard-of. So why was 'The Exquisite Corpse Project' such an enormous success? Perhaps it was because the project was lead by a 'neutral-party.' Since Michael is the SVP Creative Director Art + Design at Nickelodeon and TV Land, we could always assume that he was considered 'safe.' Or perhaps it's because over the past 10 years motion has laid a foundation of being neutral turf – a place where competitors can easily come together."
Waldron directed the first "Exquisite Corpse Project" in 2013. In 2014, he directed "The Exquisite Corpse Project 2," which was awarded Vimeo Staff Pick. "'The Exquisite Corpse Project X' at motion 2016 was the end of the trilogy," concludes Montoya, "but also the beginning of the next story. We wonder what will Michael Waldron think of next?"
The Los Angeles screening of "The Exquisite Project X" will be held on Monday, July 18th. The location will be announced on Michael's Twitter feed in the next few days at @tvartboy. The New York screening will be some time in August.
