In the years since the recession began, few organizations have faced a more difficult public relations battle than the Federal Reserve Bank. It’s no secret that Americans are less trusting of both banks and government in the wake of the financial crisis- and the Federal Reserve falls into both categories. As the public sector’s most visible financial institution, it wasn’t surprising that the Fed became the subject of public scrutiny. What was startling to economists at the Central Bank however, was how much of the feedback from the public indicated a general misunderstanding of the Fed’s dual mandate of reducing unemployment and controlling inflation. Suddenly in the public spotlight, the Federal Reserve needed to clarify it’s role in government and the economy.nnThe Federal Reserve knew that this project would present a unique challenge. To explain the Fed’s role to the public, they would first need to explain economic topics like inflation, and gross domestic product. No small task, since these ideas are incredibly complex, and the subject of fevered debate even among experts. On the other hand, just about any high school student in the country will tell you how quickly a detailed economics lesson can turn into a long afternoon nap. The Central Bank needed a way to discuss economic topics with enough depth to satisfy specialists and avoid controversy, but in an interesting enough way to reach an average person. In short, they needed help.nnEnter premiere Atlanta video production company The DVI Group, who emerged from a crowded field of producers and agencies as the best team for the job. Rather than presenting the traditional educational video that the Federal Reserve was expecting, The DVI Group pitched their vision for the project: a fully animated piece of branded entertainment in the vein of the famous schoolhouse rocks series. The goal: to create a video interesting enough to capture a viewer’s attention, and simple enough that they wouldn’t get bogged down in the details.nnIn order to really understand the topics, The DVI Group spent days locked in a room with specialists from the Federal Reserve, and another two weeks distilling all that information into story form. The result: a 4 minute video packed to the brim with fun characters and visual metaphors that break the topics down into something that makes sense in everyday life.nnThe final videos has been embraced among economists, and will be featured in high school and college classrooms around the country. Although the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta originally contracted for two videos, the results have been convincing enough for them to commission videos on an additional six topics, which they expect to be release sometime this year.nnYou can find the first two videos in the series below:n
