Ben/Dave (Ben Hurst & Dave Thomas) have one of the top ten most watched YouTube ad videos in May with a spot they created for Samsung out of Possible Worldwide/Seattle. The spot “Buddy the Dog” takes a Lars and the Real Girl approach to a man’s relationship with his stuffed dog.
“Since the action in our scenes is all pretty goofy, we wanted to contrast that action with a filmmaking approach that played things straight,” says Ben. “Less like a broad comedy, more like a naturalist inde-sort of film.”
“A lot of it really came down to performance,” adds Dave. “Our lead actor, Karl Ramsey, did a great job of making his relationship with the fake dog feel natural and genuine, which made the comedy better.”
It appears that people are continuing to connect with the outlandish comedy played straight, as Samsung’s spot continues its viral spread.
