Deluxe Australia congratulates “Samson & Delilah” for receiving the Camera d’Or first film prize at this year’s Cannes festival. Writer-Director Warwick Thornton’s tale of young love in an indigenous community was not only his feature film debut, but the first feature film to be funded through Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department.
Jane Campion’s “Bright Star” had its world premiere in Competition at Cannes. It is the ninth film directed by Campion to screen at Cannes and her fourth feature selected in Competition.
Deluxe Australia’s Managing Director Alaric McAusland said, “We’re thrilled that these two important Aussie movies were recognized at Cannes and are proud to have provided extensive post production work on both films.”
Anthos Simon, Deluxe Australia’s General Manager of Creative Services, recalls the filmmakers for “Samson & Delilah” coming to Deluxe for guidance early in the project. “From our first reading of the script we knew it was an important story and one we wanted to help tell,” said Simon. “We were there from day one.”
“Samson & Delilah’s” producer, Kath Shelper, credits Deluxe Australia and EFILMTM Sydney for helping the filmmakers from the first camera tests through the release prints and delivery items. “We couldn’t have been happier with the service and the unbelievable quality,” said Shelper.
Jane Campion, who has worked with the Sydney facility over the last two decades when it was previously Atlab, had extensive experience color timing her films through the photochemical process. In collaborating with the team at EFILMTM Sydney on “Bright Star” she was able to explore the nuances of the digital intermediate process. “We really wanted to be sure the film would look as we imagined,” said Campion. “The DI process and printing grading is quite complicated technically but in the end the consistency, mood and feel of my DI or print is what matters, and what excites me. Olivier Fontenay, our colourist, has an artists concern to do the best and so do I.”
Deluxe Australia supplied laboratory services with Deluxe’s EFILMTM Sydney providing digital intermediate, digital effects and video delivery services for both films. Work also included Digital Cinema Mastering for “Bright Star.”
