da Vinci Systems, LLC, today announced that ANDTRANSFER has deployed a Resolve® digital mastering suite for color grading and digital intermediate (DI) finishing on a variety of commercials and long-form projects, including promos of “Dexter” for Showtime Networks and CBS. In addition, ANDTRANSFER recently upgraded its Resolve with version 6.2 software, becoming the first post facility in the Southwest to offer color grading of native RED™ Raw digital motion picture files (via the Resolve R-series) — eliminating time-consuming .r3D-to-DPX file conversion.
A spinoff of 30-year-old Video Post & Transfer, Dallas-based ANDTRANSFER relies on its Resolve for file- and tape-based commercials, and, increasingly, 35mm spots. The Resolve is an integral part of ANDTRANSFER’s nonlinear workflow. Client-supplied EDLs are used to select digital image files from a SAN, organize scenes on a timeline, and immediately begin grading the scenes in context. The da Vinci Resolve workflow cuts project times by nearly half.
The “Dexter” promos, “Secrets” and “Funhouse,” were supplied to ANDTRANSFER in multiple acquisition formats with various frame rates and color space. With Resolve, ANDTRANSFER colorists import, conform, and seamlessly convert the varying formats into one format. Also, because some of the source material are DPX files with limited latitude, scenes are colored and enhanced manually. Prior to the Resolve, this was an intensive and time-consuming process.
With Resolve, ANDTRANSFER accelerates workflows, improves performance, and shortens completion times for projects shot with RED cameras. In addition to eliminating file conversion, the new software improves image quality and enhances creativity by enabling colorists to use the full dynamic range of RED files.
“As new data formats emerge, da Vinci helps us keep pace with technological and industry changes,” said Kelly Rimenschneider, a colorist at ANDTRANSFER. “The immediacy of importing and then working with RED files in real time is a huge timesaver for our clients, and also gives our team of colorists more time for creative choices.”
