In this spec spot, a venerable Las Vegas casino is compared to the ultimate male fantasy in a new spec spot directed (with tongue firmly planted in cheek) by Peter Dietrich of A Common Thread.
The spec spot centers on a man, John, who arrives at his girlfriend’s home to meet her family. This potentially uncomfortable task takes a pleasant turn when he discovers that the girlfriend’s sister and even her mother are drop-dead gorgeous (and flirtatious). Dad, too, is, well, a babe. Don’t even ask about Wendy the goldfish. Voice-over and graphics draw the parallel to the daily “deals and specials” offered by the casino, noting, “Get more than you bargained for.”
The spot has a suave, sixties aesthetic and is directed with understated aplomb by Dietrich. From the cocktail pitchers to dad’s briar pipe, it’s calculated to evoke an era when the male libido reigned, but delivered with an ironic touch that keeps it in the realm of fun.
Dietrich shot the spot in a unique Beverly Hills home that is a stunning example of sixties minimalism. The spot is beautifully shot by Nic Sadler (Buffalo Soldiers, Trauma) and Dietrich’s casting is spot on: John is an everyman who can’t believe his good fortune, while the women appear in order of escalating allure.
“Peter cares as much about getting the aesthetics right as he does about the comedy and the concept,” says A Common Thread executive producer J.P. McMahon. “He worked closely with the San Francisco agency creatives in taking what was a quirky script and breathing cinematic life into it.”
