Hybrid post-production facility Cognition has completed construction of a 4K digital intermediate theater as part of its ongoing multi-million dollar expansion. Designed for finishing studio and independent features, the theater is among the most technically sophisticated in Southern California with an array of state-of-the-art color grading, editorial, projection and sound features. Several film projects have already come through the new resource, including A Happening of Monumental Proportions and Marauders, both finished in 4K using an ACES workflow.
Cognition has also promoted Eileen Godoy to Head of Post Production. Formerly Executive Producer, Godoy will oversee post-production operations; lead sales, business development and marketing; and direct personnel and recruitment. Godoy is a 20-year veteran of the post-production industry with previous senior-level experience at NBC/Universal and EFILM. The facility is currently seeking to expand its sales team.
“We couldn’t be more proud and excited to promote Eileen, a bright, engaging, and knowledgeable professional who has thrived in a primarily male-dominated field,” said Cognition CEO Brian Pope. He also added, “As a company that strives to be a leading provider and developer of post-production and VR technology, we’re thrilled to now offer the community our new creative office space and state-of-the-art theater.”
“The theater’s primary function is digital intermediate-style color grading and finishing, but it is designed to be a multi-function room,” explains Gustavo Mendes, Cognition’s workflow consultant. “It is an excellent theater for all types of screenings, and if a production wanted to mix in the space, it has that capability. We offer filmmakers many options.”The 12-seat, 4K theater features SGO’s Mistika platform, which combines color grading, editing, finishing, visual effects and other functions. It is also equipped with a Barco DP4K-P post-production projector and a 21-foot Stewart Filmscreen reference screen. Additionally, the room has a 7.1 surround sound system and an acoustical design suitable for feature sound work.
Additionally, Cognition has a smaller theater, also featuring a 4K Mistika system that is designed for television, documentaries and similar projects. Its reference display is a Dolby PRM-4220, a flat panel monitor proven to outperform CRTs for color reproduction. The theater supports grading and finishing in P3/Rec 709 and XYZ color spaces. Recent projects include The Little Master, an ESPN Films documentary for its 30 for 30 series.
Cognition’s further expansion plans include an emerging technologies research center and creative office space. The research center will house an in-house team that’s doing groundbreaking work in virtual reality, photogrammetry, augmented reality and other emerging media. The creative office space is available to film and television productions now on short and long-term bases and is being repped by Patrick Amos of CBRE. The overall aim is to build a creative campus that can host projects from incubation through final delivery.
The project was designed by Pope and architect Rios Clementi Hale Studios. Audio Intervisual Design is handling IT and systems integration. SoundKinetics is providing acoustical engineering.
Cognition is located at 900 N Cahuenga Blvd., Suite B, Los Angeles, CA 90038.
