The top prize-winning film and television productions at this year’s Visual Effects Society Awards each relied on Codex technology for camera data recording and workflow management.
Life of Pi, Game of Thrones and The Avengers employed Codex recorders and workflow systems. Life of Pi, which won four VES Awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture, employed Codex recorders on the set to capture dual streams of data from pairs of Arri Alexa cameras used to shoot the movie. Additionally, Codex digital laboratory systems were employed near-set to manage and back-up data generated by the stereo production.
HBO’s Game of Thrones, which also won four awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Program, used Codex‘s recorders and digital lab technology as part of a fully file-based workflow. Codex Onboard recorders and datapacks captured data from the production’s Arri Alexa cameras; Codex Digital Labs were used to prepare dailies for review, editorial, visual effects and post production.
“Codex extends its sincere congratulations to the visual effects teams who won these awards, and to the entire production teams on their outstanding achievements,” said Codex‘s VP of Market Development Sarah Priestnall. “Life of Pi and Game of Thrones were each extraordinarily complex productions that made innovative use on new technology with incredible results. We were pleased to support their efforts.”
The Avengers, which also employed Codex technology, earned two VES Awards (Outstanding Created Environment in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture and Outstanding Models in a Feature Motion Picture).
Life of Pi and The Avengers are among the nominees for this year’s Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. In seven of the past 10 years, the film that won the VES Award for Outstanding VFX in a VFX-Driven Feature has gone on to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar.
