Director Javier Aguilera has joined Bully Pictures for exclusive U.S. representation. Aguilera brings more than ten years of experience as a director, an award-winning reel and an international reputation to his new home. His work for such brands as Lexus, Virgin Mobile, Toyota, and VW, among others, has been heralded for its innovative storytelling and cinematic execution.
“We are super excited to add Javier to our roster,” says Bully Executive Producer Astrid Downs. “His eclectic narrative style is infused by a fresh, youthful energy that should attract top creative in our market.”
Aguilera, whose most recent work has originated from Mexico and Canada, says that he is joining Bully Pictures in order to gain broader exposure in the U.S. “The general market is my number one priority,” he explains. He adds that he chose to join Bully Pictures because of its national reach and strong reputation.
“I was initially drawn to their high-end work and boutique-size roster and once I was exposed to their forward-thinking business model, focusing on strategic sales and hands-on career management, I knew it was the right company for me.”
Aguilera was born in Mexico City, but grew up in Los Angeles, New York and London. He attended film school in Canada and first established his career there as a music video director with Spy Films in Toronto. Soon after, he made the transition into commercials, launching his career shooting campaigns for Coca-Cola, GM, Panasonic, Jeep and Bacardi.
In part due to his multi-national background, Aguilera’s work is incredibly diverse and reflects a unique cosmopolitan vision. Diesel Ultrasound, for example, is a gritty, day-in-the-life portrait of a hermaphrodite prostitute. Ford Ice showcases a man driving across an ocean to get back the love of his life, leaving a frozen world in his wake.
“I’m drawn to smart, unconventional concepts that, regardless of their genre, challenge an audience,” he says. “Whether it’s an idea grounded in reality or one that takes the viewer into a fantasy realm, it should always make an emotional impact.”
Aguilera is the recipient of six F.I.A.P.’s (Ibero-American Advertising Awards), two Juno Awards for Video-of-the-Year, and four Much Music Video Awards.
In addition to his commercial work, Aguilera has directed two critically acclaimed short films. “Round 5,” which premiered at Res Fest, earned him Best International Film honors at HollyShorts in Los Angeles. It was purchased by Canal +, after screening at the Short Film Corner in Cannes.
His second film “5:55,” toured the international festival circuit. It won the Award for Visual Excellence at the Cleveland Film Festival. Aguilera is represented by CAA for long-form work.
