Los Angeles-based Boxer Films director Rodrigo Garcia Saiz took home three 2013 Cannes Lions, marking his fifth year bringing home honors from the International Festival of Creativity. He took home a Silver Lion in Commercial Public Services for the :50 “Pool” for Latinworks and WRAAC and two Bronze Lions for his provocative :60 “Playground” for Todos Los Dias Es El Dia (Everyday is the Day to Not Discriminate) and the shocking :30 “Discussion” for AMIS. In addition to his award-winning work, the seasoned helmer has also recently delivered a series of memorable spots for the US, including a charming spot for Dole out of DDB, an action-packed spot for Charter out of Fallon and a quirky and memorable comedic campaign for Skittles out of DDB Chicago, the latter of which were shortlisted at last year’s Cannes Lions.
In his ’13 Silver Lion for Commercial Public Services winner, the :50 “Pool” for Latinworks and WRAAC, Saiz gathered a group of kids and asked them to act out a scene with dolls in what could be interpreted as the beginning of a clichรฉd adult film scenario. Saiz shows what would happen if left unsupervised and filmed the rather shocking results.
His Bronze Cannes Lion winner “Playground,” out of Ogilvy & Mather Mexico, features a young boy, whose studying is interrupted by an earsplitting blast, vaulting him into a terrifying chase throughout the school by an unidentified shooter. The boy eventually collapses to the ground in the center of the playground after taking a bullet to the leg, surrounded by the responsible parties: a group of cackling schoolyard bullies.
Garcia Saiz amps up the shock factor in his latest work for AMIS (Association of Mexican Insurance Companies) in his Bronze Lion-winning :30 “Discussion” out of Ogilvy & Mather Mexico. The spot peers in on a couple arguing in their living room, when a spontaneous explosion, which launches the coffee table aside and leaves the man unconscious, halts their conversation. The spot paints a vivid visual of the dangers of texting while driving, and harkens back to Garcia Saiz’s :30 “Office” for the association, which took home a Gold Cannes Lion in 2011.
Last year, Garcia Saiz received a Bronze Cannes Lion for his Gandhi Bookstores campaign.
