Amber Music, a Bicoastal commercial music production company, recently received national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). In order to receive this certification, Amber Music had to go through a meticulous process including and in-depth review of the business and site inspection. The certification process is designed to confirm the business is at least 51% owned, operated and controlled by a woman or women.
Amber Music is among one of the first music production companies to receive minority status, which gives them a competitive edge with the ever-growing quotas that brands are facing to work with minority companies. Says Leo Burnett’s Chris Rossiter, “More and more clients are asking for certain percentages of their spend to be targeted toward minority-owned business annually. Generally, agencies are expected to reach percentages of overall spend.”
Working with businesses of minority status has become an increasingly important corporate value to many major brands including Coca-Cola and Proctor & Gamble. While these diversity standards are imposed from within rather than from national or state legislation, they are still taken quite seriously at a corporate level. The Coca-Cola Company’s diversity statement notes, “Our mission is to maximize procurement opportunities with minority and women-owned businesses (MWBEs) as suppliers, contractors and subcontractors of goods and services.” By including women-owned businesses among their vendors, corporations, and government agencies demonstrate their commitment to fostering diversity and the continued development of their supplier/vendor diversity programs.
