The AICP Show premiered today and this evening at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. The Show is a compendia of two distinct bodies of work: The Art & Technique of the American Commercial (now in its 21st year) and The Next Awards (now its sixth year). The Art & Technique of the American Commercial honors the best in commercial advertising, while the Next Awards recognizes marketing that crosses boundaries and media channels.
Serving as chair of this year’s Show was Jackie Kelman Bisbee, Founding Partner/Co-Owner, of Park Pictures. The Art & Technique of the American Commercial premiered tonight at MoMA, with 2,000 members of the advertising, marketing and production industries in attendance. The Next Awards, led by judging chair Rei Inamoto, Chief Creative Officer of AKQA, debuted earlier in the day. Following its premiere at MoMA, the Show will tour museums and cultural institutions around the country and abroad. This year’s honorees – along with the entire Show archive – are available for viewing at www.aicpshow.com. Each year, the honored work becomes a part of the archives of the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art. The collection now numbers over 1,500 pieces of advertising in the motion image.
Each category of the Show may have up to three honorees, with the exception of Most Next (described below), Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial and Advertising Excellence/Campaign, which may have only one honoree each, making those pieces “Best in Show.” Google Chrome’s “Dear Sophie,” “It Gets Better,” and “Bieber,” out of BBH New York and Google Creative Labs, were honored for Advertising Excellence/Campaign. Moxie Pictures served as creative consultant on “Bieber” and “Dear Sophie.” Chipolte’s “Back To The Start” was honored for Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial; the piece was directed by Johnny Kelly of Nexus Productions, out of Creative Artists Agency.
Three new categories were added to the Show this year – Social, Cause Marketing, and Most Next, all in the Next Awards.
The Next Awards this year featured for the first time a Most Next winner, which best exemplifies from among this year’s Next winners the most innovative and forward thinking work of the year. The honor is recognized with a $5,000 grant, drawn from the AICP Foundation, to an educational organization selected by the entrant. This year’s honor went to Sony & Nissan’s “GT Academy,” out of TBWAChiatDay and directed by @radical.media’s Jeff Zwart. TBWAChiatDay chose to direct the funds to Room 13, an international network of student-driven creative studios founded as a single room in 1994 in Caol, Scotland.
The Art & Technique of the American Commercial has a bifurcated judging system, which begins with a series of judging panels featuring over 300 from across the country, with experts in various fields judging work across the 23 categories. The process culminates in the meeting of the Curatorial Committee, which is the final arbiter in the disposition of the Show, confirming eligibility and appropriateness to category. A separate panel of leading-edge creative practitioners selects the Next Awards winners.
The AICP Show reel features custom-designed graphics by Blacklist + Studio AKA, with an original score by Antfood. The Show Sponsor piece was created by Stardust, with music by Squeak E. Clean.
The Shortlist Gallery, a projection of the Show and Next Awards shortlists, was displayed on the second floor of MoMA. The installation was created by Spot Welders, and Blacklist + Studio AKA, with technical execution by McCann Systems using custom configured Christie Projection.
The AICP Show sponsors help make the Show possible. AICP’s Partners, who support all AICP events throughout the year, are: CAPS, Corbis Motion, Deluxe, and Universal. Its Supporting Partners are Kodak and Sony Pictures Studios. The Show Corporate Leader is the Directors Guild of America (DGA). The Corporate Benefactors are: Advertising Age, Aspen Travel, BLACKLIST+STUDIO AKA, Creativity, International Digital Centre, Inc.; Istros Media Corporation, The London Hotels, McCann Systems, Nice Shoes, SHOOT Magazine/SHOOTonline, SourcEcreative, and Zester. Corporate Patrons: Antfood, Arenson Prop Center; Autodesk, COLOR: An Audio Production Company; Entertainment Partners; Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz; Hello World Communications; shots, Spot Welders; Squeak E. Clean Productions; Stardust Studios; and VCU Brandcenter.
The Next Awards breakfast was sponsored by CAPS and RED Digital Cinema; the networking coffee was sponsored by CAPS and Dolby Laboratories Inc.
After its debut at MoMA, the Show goes on tour across the United States and abroad. The Show will screen in Los Angeles on July 25th; in San Francisco on September 12th (the Next Awards) and September 13th (The Show); in Dallas on October 17th; in Boston on October 25th; and in Richmond on November 1st. The dates for Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Miami will be posted on aicp.com as they become available.

About AICP
Founded in 1972, AICP represents, exclusively, the interests of United States companies that specialize in producing commercials in various media—film, video, digital—for advertisers and agencies. The association, with national offices in New York and Los Angeles as well as regional chapters across the country, serves as a strong collective voice for this $5 billion-plus industry by: disseminating information; representing the production industry within the advertising community in business circles, in labor negotiations and before governmental officials; developing industry standards and tools; providing professional development; and marketing American production.
About THE AICP FOUNDATION
Established in 2008, The AICP Foundation is a New York State 501(c)3 non- profit set up by the Association of Independent Commercial Producers. As a charitable organization, its goal is to raise monies via events and other donations for the purposes of distributing such funds to other institutions or organizations selected by its Board with the goal of training and nurturing young talent – and promoting diversity – in the advertising and film industries. Current beneficiaries include: the VCU Brandcenter AICP Scholarship Fund, the Streetlights Foundation, and the Made in NY PA Training Program.
About ROOM 13
The room was used as an art studio where the students could go to make artwork, research or read. The model is based upon four pillars of learning: philosophical inquiry, creative expression, reciprocal learning and business enterprise. More importantly it was their room, their space and, as such, was managed entirely by them. They formed a management team, raised funds, managed the studio and decided what they wanted to explore and produce with a business practice that was expected to be self-sustaining to the best of its ability. TBWA first connected with Room 13 in February 2004, and in 2005 helped to establish a pilot project in South Africa. The success has resulted in a commitment to help Room 13 expand around the world and now includes 93 studios worldwide. Today, TBWA is working with Light Bringer Project in the U.S. and has established six Room 13’s nationwide, with further plans for expansion in California, New York, Colorado, Iowa and Arkansas.
