“Parts”, a short film directed and edited by commercial cutter Scott Hanson of N2O Editorial, had it’s debut screening in the short film competition at AFI Dallas 2008.
This is the first directing effort for Hanson, who leaned on his commercial editing experience during the project. “Telling a tightly packed story is almost always part of the task with spot work, so that definitely influenced the film from the writing all the way through to the final cut.”
Also contributing to the project were spot veterans Dan Hill, who did the finishing for the short at N2O Editorial, and Jake Kluge of charlieuniformtango, who handled sound design and mix. Russell Smith, also of charlieuniformtango, composed original music for the 20 minute film.
“Parts” was shot in Dallas, Texas in 2006 over the July 4th weekend in a single vacant warehouse where all the sets were created and took advantage of the benefits of a shoe string budget. “We used our limitations to our advantage. When your hands are tied, you become that much more creative. The crew pulled off some amazing things with some pretty tough situations.” Those limitations include shooting in one hundred degree temperatures, no electricity or running water, and very little money. In fact Hanson described the budget for Parts as “one trip to the hospital and two relationships."
Hanson has returned to the cutting room at N2O, having just completed projects for the Texas Rangers through Door Number 3 in Austin, and a documentary spot package for the Mayo Clinic with The Richards Group.
Scott Hanson, the co-writer, director and editor of “Parts”, is a commercial editor at N2O Editorial in Dallas for the last three years. Prior to that he spent seven years at charlieuniformtango. Hanson’s list of past projects include work for The Home Depot, ExxonMobil, Southwest Airlines, Conaco, and BMW.
He is an alumnus of the film school graduate program at Boston University.
