Bicoastal/Munich-based Aéro Film has bolstered their directorial roster with the addition of directors Sue Worthy and Dan Gifford for U.S. commercial representation. Worthy’s natural skill for capturing exquisite moments through vivid imagery is evident in spots for Olay, Mitsubishi, Dove, Ford, Herbal Essences and Johnson & Johnson, among others. Gifford has directed over 100 commercials for a diverse range of international clients including Nikon, Adidas, Toyota, PlayStation, BBC, Nike, Heineken, Expedia, Reebok and Unicef, among numerous others. Worthy joined the BBC as a designer/director after graduating with a Fine Arts degree, winning nearly every major industry award for her work including a BAFTA for “Spring and Summer,” a Royal Television Society Gold for “Under the Sun” and a D&AD Silver Pencil for her BBC 2 idents. Armed with a successful promo reel, she seamlessly shifted to commercials, eventually honing her adroitness with beauty spots. Beauty work combines her love of capturing affecting performance with high-end cinematography and seamless in-camera effects to create stunning visual experiences. When she’s not behind the camera, Worthy is out on a track burning rubber on one of her Ducati race bikes.
“With our office expanding in New York, we had the bandwith to bring new talent to our roster. We’re thrilled to be bringing on such unique directors that truly bring a new dimension to Aero but stay with our core values of excellent craftsmanship. Sue’s beauty work is stunning and so well known,” notes Aéro Executive Producer/Partner Lance O’Connor. Adds Worthy, “In my genre of commercials, an effortlessly beautiful film only results from a passion for detail and an intuitive understanding of what the script requires in order to realize the visual promise of the words written on paper. Aéro shares my ethos of placing the creative above all else and they have consciously nurtured an environment where directors actively share ideas and experience. This challenges me to continue to push the boundaries of any project.”
Norfolk, England-born Gifford followed his penchant for adventure after graduating high school, spending a year teaching English in Brazil before returning to England to study German and Italian at Oxford University. Following school, he directed his first short film “Suspended,” which won first prize at the Stella Artois film awards in 2000. Shortly thereafter, he began directing spots, signing with Arden Sutherland-Dodd in London. Since then he has directed commercials for some of the top production houses in London including Stink, Knucklehead Films, Sonny London and 76ltd. His work has received widespread acclaim including two Silver Sharks at Kinsdale and the Grand Prix for Best Film at the Eurobest Awards, and Silver Lion at Cannes in 2012 for his work on Heineken “Legendary Making Of.”
Notes Gifford, “I’m thrilled to be joining Aéro, and feel very proud to sit alongside the other directors in what is a very talented roster. I can’t wait to get started.” O’Connor adds, “We’re excited to have Dan join our roster. All his work—as diverse as it is—all has a bit of magic to it. From hidden camera to kids to docu-style and famous footballers—Dan’s work teems with emotion. Everyone at Aéro can’t help but smile watching his reel, and knew he’d be an amazing addition to our family.”
